Neosho, MO is a town in Butler County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Ammunition production began in 1881 in this small town and continued until 1959 when it was replaced by reloading shops. The name "Neosho" means "place where many arrows are shot." The first ammunition store opened in 1881 on Main Street near the present site of Neosho High School. The store was run by John Weiser and his sons John and George Weiser who also manufactured ammunition for sale to customers. In 1892, J.P. Beauregard bought the business from Weiser’s sons and continued to operate it under that name until 1909 when he became president of Armour-Alloy Works Incorporated (now Arma Industries). ThereafterUntil 1955 Ammo Manufacturing Company operated as Ammo Manufacturing Co., Ltd., one of several firms which produced ammo for Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) forces in Canada during World War I and II. By the early 1970s, both rifle cartridges and handguns were chambered for 7.62x39mm NATO rounds, with more rifles being precision-crafted to accept this round as well.
Neosho was founded in 1853 by the Missouri Company, a group of investors from Missouri City. The town was named for Neosho County, Kansas, which at the time included part of what is now Neosho County. In 1870, Neosho became an incorporated village when it annexed portions of three other towns in western Kansas: Topeka, Shawnee City, and Lenora. Manufacturing began to take off after World War I when new technologies such as aluminum plants came online. However, during World War II, production stopped because of the war effort. After the war ended, industries slowly died out until they were revived by new companies that moved intoNeosho during the 1990s and 2000s. Today, Neosho is a thriving community with many businesses that continue to provide employment opportunities for locals and tourists alike. It has also become one ofMissouri's fastest growing cities with its workforce surpassing 1,000 residents in 2016 alone!
Neosho is located in the Ozarks of Missouri. It was founded on a small stream, Neosho Creek, by pioneers in 1837. The first post office was established at Neosho in 1839. In 1865, the town became a county seat and remained so until it was dissolved as a result of its affiliation with neighboring Jefferson County.
