Neosho is a small town in Iahe County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1854 by Alexander Neosho and his wife Euphemia Smith. The Neoshos were pioneers in the development of agriculture in what is now Iahe County. They also built a corrugated iron mill and gristmill in the town. In 1872, they bought 6,000 acres (2 km²) of land east of the city for $5 per acre ($/ha). This land served as a rural county seat until it became Neosho when St. Louis annexed Iahe County in 1905. In 1909, Neosho voters decided to rename their town after General John Jordon Ziegler who had commanded American forces during World War I and who later served as governor of Missouri from 1921 to 1923. The first store opened in Neosho on November 24, 1909 under the name "The General Store." The store closed on October 26, 1951 because it could not compete with local stores that had been established since before World War I. On October 9, 1925, two gunmen entered an insurance office in downtown Neosho and shot three employees dead before escaping into a nearby corn field where they killed another employee and wounded four others before being captured by police officers who took them into custody without incident. Two days later on October 11th one shooter died from wounds received as result of this shooting spree while police arrested six other people involved: five men and one woman who authorities said operated a prostitution ring out of her home; all six subjects were charged with capital murder except for one man whose case was dismissed because he could provide no evidence against himself; all but one man pleaded guilty to capital murder or conspiracy to commit capital murder which carries sentences up to life imprisonment without parole if convicted at trial; all except for one man are currently serving life sentences at State Penitentiaries throughout Missouri outside any possibility of parole eligibility scheduled for their next birthday

The community was founded in 1854 by planters from Kentucky and Tennessee who named it for Neosho County, Iowa, where they had been forced to leave during the American Civil War. In 1907, Neosho began receiving mail from Missouri through the U.S. Postal Service and incorporation as a village occurred that year; however, no buildings were ever erected until 1923 when the present courthouse and jail were built. In 1944, General George Smedley commandeered approximately one-third of all USAAF airmen stationed at RAF High Wycombe near Oxfordshire in England to bomb Neosho and other townships near Wichita Falls, Texas because of Axis war preparations there; as a result of this bombing campaign (the "High Wycombe Blitz"), many homes were destroyed or damaged which led to some people calling for a boycott of local products following World War II due to fears that munitions production might be affected too. The high concentration of civilian casualties caused by Allied bombings during World War II has been called "one of history's great sanitization campaigns".

It became a city in 1907. The population was 2,534 at the 2010 census. The first settler in what is now Neosho was John Parsons, who arrived from Pennsylvania in 1836. In 1840 he married Rebecca Hefner, also from Pennsylvania and they started a family. They were the first white people to live in what is now Neosho Township. In 1845 John and Rebecca moved to what is now Dunkirk Township because their land there had been patented to them by James Kappenberg, one of the promoters of Kansas City as it then was known. In 1863 Union General James Swayne burned down part of Neoshos courthouse; when news spread of this event local residents gathered around the courthouse fire to prevent its burning which would have destroyed their town center. This action helped preserve some aspects of early 20th century life here such as social clubs and churches that continued until after World War II. The post office opened at Neosho on February 14, 1838 under the name Dunkirk; it changed its name to neosho on July 1st, 1850 after becoming an incorporated city with same boundaries as Johnson County [now Johnson County MO]. By 1860 all but two buildings within present day downtown had been erected; this included four large blocks bounded by Second Street (northwest), Third Street (southwest), Constitution Avenue ( southeast) and Main Street (southwest). One block east of First Street lay Iowa Avenue which served as commercial street for most of those years until 1913 when it became University Boulevard which connects downtown with Interstate 44/Ulysses S Grant College Park eastward into University Heights neighborhood westward where I-44 ends at US Highway 31[now Ballpark Drive]. “Dunkirk” meaning “a place where potatoes are grown” probably originated with John Parsons when he discovered potatoes near his settlement in 1836 although no evidence exists to support this claim beyond conjecture without any corroboration from sources other thanJohn Parsons himself or his own memories about these events
