Neosho is a town in Livingston County, Missouri, United States. The population was 451 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Neosho was founded in 1836 by a group of settlers from Illinois and Ohio who crossed the state line into what is now Livingston County to go prospect for land. The town was named after John Neosho, one of the original pioneers. The first school in Neosho was built on the current site of the high school in 1868. The first post office was established in 1879; it changed its name to Neosho in 1908. In 1924, the town plat was filed with United States Geological Survey and it has been continuously inhabited since that time. The community had a population of 602 as of 2010, but this number has decreased over time due to population loss and natural decrease such as Elk Grove Village annexing nearby townships). In 1960, work began on building a new high school which would serve Neosho and surrounding communities; construction ended up taking many years because of funding shortages caused by World War II. In 1998, when Jefferson High School opened in nearby Elk Grove Village, Neosho lost its only high school and became an all-boys public school again. In recent years there have been proposals for redevelopment or closure of several local businesses due to budget problems within the community itself.
