In the early 1800s, the area now known as Neosho was part of what is now Missouri. The first permanent settler in this area was Capt. John Smith, who built a cabin on the site of present-day Neosho on March 22, 1812. This location became home to many other pioneer families until it was sold to the government for land east of Springfield in 1818. The first shop in this area was opened by David Ritchie in 1827. Ritchie operated a sawmill, grist mill and flour mill at this location until he went out of business in 1845. At that time, his son-in-law, James Wray opened a store next door to Ritchie's buildings which continued to be known as Wray's General Store until 1886 when it became the original Neosho post office. By 1860, there were over 100 businesses operating in Neosho with a population of around 1,000 people. By 1870, however, business had slowed down and only 15 businesses still existed statewide whenNeosho incorporated as an unincorporated town on December 12th of that year under the name "Neosho." The town remained an unincorporated community until 1954 when its status was changed from agricultural center to urban center due to its high growth rate and presence of numerous companies and organizations within its boundaries such as Monsanto Chemical Company (the world's largest producer of genetically modified crops), Central State Dam & Power Plant (one of America's largest hydroelectric power plants), Kansas Pacific Railway Depot (once one of America’s busiest railway terminals) and more than 50 small businesses located within easy walking distance along Main Street including several banks and two grocery stores before becoming home to more than 2,500 residents by 1970 census estimates. It should also be noted that while most development took place outside the downtown core during these early years - much progress has been made inside city limits since then with new housing developments being built along both sides of Main Street while efforts are ongoing towards creating an downtown district - Neosho remains largely unchanged today with few exceptions having replaced older buildings with recently constructed equivalents while most commercial districts have seen redevelopment into mixed use/residential areas which continueto thrive today despite occasional reductions or elimination in employment opportunities resulting from gentrification trends around town cores across Missouri overall

Neosho, Missouri is a small town located in central Kansas. It was formed in 1854 from the merger of two other settlements, Neosho and Higgins. The town's name comes from the Shawnee word neshi-ho meaning "place where there is water." The first settler in Neosho was John Witherspoon. He erected a log cabin on the current site of the Neosho Methodist Church in 1855. By 1860, most of the population of Neosho had arrived from eastern Kansas Territory. In 1865, Isaac Hussey established a gristmill on the banks of the Arkansas River near present-day Hughesville. In 1871, James Hickey set up a mill at what is now called New Market and built a store around it to serve as an important center for local commerce. In 1873, Larkin & Green built their first stagecoach stop at what is now east side High School; this stop helped promote trade between Neosho and neighboring towns. In 1876, people from nearby Overland City began moving to Neosho to take advantage of its good soil and climate. They founded a school that year and named it after Stonington Township's mayor, George Sibley (1811-1885). The town grew rapidly during this time; by 1880 it had over 100 residents. A new courthouse was built in 1889; it became elated with international fame when Queen Victoria visited it during her 1893 visit to America; she awarded its construction credit to her son Prince Albert II of Saxe-Coburg- Gotha! The building served as courtrooms until 1948 when they were replaced by more modern facilities in downtown Neosho.

Neosho was founded in 1834 by John L. Neosho and his brother, James S. Neosho. The first settlers were farmers who arrived on the Missouri River in 1834 and built log cabins near the present-day town of Neosho. In 1835, the brothers organized a wagon company to travel to St. Louis and sell goods to the city's merchants. They also began trading with Indians along the way. In 1838, they moved from their log cabin to a more permanent structure, which they named "New Home." They continued commercial activities until 1850 when they became owners of a sawmill located in what is now Downtown Neosho. They operated the mill until 1862 when it was taken over by a local bank. The mill buildings remain today as part of downtown's history museum. In 1861, John L. Neosho married Lydia Hogue and together they started a bakery in what is now Old Town Neosho. The couple operated the bakery until 1890 when he died and she continued operations alone until her death in 1909. The bakery continued operating until sold to another business owner in 1925. The old school building currently stands as part of downtown's history museum.
