O'Fallon, Missouri is a small town in Johnson County, Missouri. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the St. Francois County metropolitan area. O'Fallon is part of the Springfield-Springfield-Upton, MO–KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now O'Fallon were French fur traders in 1671. A post office called Ulysses was founded in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1876. In 1868, a group of settlers led by Captain John Hargrave arrived and platted what is now O'Fallon Township; they named it after Lieutenant Colonel James Gillett (1792–1878), an American Revolutionary War officer who had fought for Maryland and Connecticut before moving to Missouri to edit the "Missouri Gazette." In 1830, surveyors found oil fields near present day O'Fallon and began drilling rigs for oil production; however, this development did not take hold until later that decade when John Holland purchased land east of town and established the Holland Oil Company; he remains its namesake today. By 1870, crude oil production from wells within present-day O’Fallon had reached a level where it became viable to ship products miles away to markets such as Carbondale and Kansas City; this experience helped spur further investment in the city by entrepreneurs such as George Waring (1837–1920) and Augustus Goldsmith (1851–1924). By 1912, there were over 100 businesses operating within city limits; during World War I demand for munitions grew tremendously due to increased hostilities across Europe; results of this boom led to increased commercial activity throughout downtown which also created many jobs. O'Fallon is a small town located in Dixon County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,621 at the 2010 census. It is named after General James O'Farrell (1785-1851), an officer in the Mexican-American War and first lieutenant general of Volunteers during the American Civil War. The community was laid out by Mormon pioneers in 1847. It began as a small log settlement on the banks of the Verdigris River. The first settler, John Fetterman, arrived in 1848 and built a cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1850, Isaac Myatt set up shop here as a saddler and wagonmaker. By 1854, there were nine settlers living here; four of them were Mormon Pioneers from Utah who had come to Missouri to spread the gospel. In 1861, Union troops burned down Myatt's cabin and all but one of his family's possessions within blocks of where O'Fallon now stands. Three years later another Union brigade burned down this same building while passing through Dixon County on their way to siege Confederate strongholds farther south along the river. This event became known as "the Burning Building Incident." Most of O'Fallon's early businesses came about through trade with nearby Dixon City; goods such as cloth and shoes were traded for flour and other items brought overland by farmers or traders on their way to market in Memphis or St Louis. However, with little industry present until after World War II when metal production increased dramatically due to wartime shortages of aluminum products in America, most businesses closed during that time period too – though one store continued open until around 1980 when it moved away from its original location across Main Street into new premises more central inside the community limits).
