He named it La Ville de l'Ange (City of the Angel), after Saint Gabriel which he had seen on his trip from Canada down to Mexico City. In 1803, James Kansa founded a small village west of present-day O'Fallon east of where he later built the capital city of Springfield on land he won from General Andrew Johnson during the American Civil War for $8 million dollars. This became known as "Kansa Town." The village flourishes until about 1840 when most people move away due to hard times caused by Indian Wars and buffalo raids over which towns developed around them instead; this includes much of present-day Springfield Township including Kansanee Heights adjacent to present day O’Fallon Cemetery along with parts today within Manor Township and Harper Woods School Districts). In 1859, attempts were made by local citizens to start an irrigation system that would have allowed agriculture more reliable water supply but failed because no investors wanted to risk their money on something they could not guarantee would work. In 1865, local resident John Fenton established a post office at what is now 2nd Street and Elm Avenue in what was then called "Fentonville." In 1896, Samuel Morse donated land near 2nd Street for a new schoolhouse and church complex which became known as Elmwood School District #2. That same year responsibility for delivering mail went from Fentonville post office to nearby Lee's Summit through horse drawn wagons until 1927 when electric delivery became available through a private company called Gulf Telegraph Company doing business as Rural Electrification Administration orURA. In 1941 Community Services Administration began providing public housing developments outside downtown Springfield so people who couldn't afford better housing could still live close enough to shop and get medical care without having too far away from their jobs or home basescamping areas like Independence and Blue Springs..
