The history of Ozark dates back to 1836 when William Stephenson arrived with his family from North Carolina to start a new life in what was then known as “the Valley of the West” (now Springfield). He purchased 640 acres (252 hectares) east of present-day Ozark from John Ralston Transcriber ville for $5 per acre ($0.50 per square foot). In 1837 he built a log cabin on the property that now stands at the corner of First Street and State Road A4 near present-day Springfield. The first post office was established at this location on October 12, 1837 under the name “Springfield”. William Stephenson died September 5, 1850 after a long and successful career as an entrepreneur and landowner in central Arkansas. His wife Nancy continued to live on their farm until her death in 1886; she is buried at Springdale Cemetery there along with her husband and children Nancie (1827-1902), Wm., Rhoda (1829-1912),and James T.(1830-1915). Eight years later another prominent local businessman named Jens Hansen opened up shop at 115 Main Street which served as the first general store in what would become Ozark. Hansen operated his store successfully until 1890 when he moved his business across State Road A4 to what is now Commerce Drive northeast of town center; he remains an important part of local history today! On November 10, 1907 City Council voted 3-2 to annex tracts located northwest and southeastof downtown ozark for municipal use purposes only! This action sets off one very active period for community development here – it would take many more years before downtown ozark became truly self reliant! For more than sixty years since its incorporation as a city, Ozarks residents have enjoyed easy access to all that their county has to offer through three airports: Stuttgart Municipal Airport southwest of town center; Little Rock Municipal Airport northeast/northwestof town center; and Conway Municipal Airport just eastof downtown ozark – making it one world class destination for travel both domestic & international! From its beginnings as an agricultural town full of farmers & ranchers who raised livestock & produced crops mostly for local consumption until becoming one of Central Arkansas’ most vibrant cities during recent decades or so - little has changed here within our thriving metropolis since those early days!

Ozark is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in Missouri and it has been occupied by Native Americans for over three hundred years. The first European to visit the area was French trader Pierre Chouteau in 1763. Chouteau named the area after his home state of Illinois, Ozarks being an allusion to chouteaux (a type of horse). The town began as a trading post on the Arkansas River near present-day Stonington. It grew rapidly because of its location, good soil, and easy access to water resources. In 1871, local farmers established a school system that became known as Ozark School District No. 2. By 1907, Ozark had a Carnegie Library and two churches – First Baptist with 210 members and Second Baptist with 350 members – both made private donations for construction. The first African American to serve as mayor was Wanda Ladd Sewell in 1984.
