A millinery shop opened in 1903 and became one of the largest employers in Raytown until it closed its doors in 1984. In 1908, local farmer John Nichols donated land to build what would become North High School; classes were originally held at his barn. North High School opened for school girls on September 3, 1909. In 1915, George Hargrave donated land for South High School which also opened for school girls on September 3, 1909; this school was eventually renamed North Kansas State University after Hargrave's death in 1951. In 1921, Raytown erected a new high school (now known as Eastman Hall) which replaced South High School; both schools were built with donations from local citizens/families who believed that an east-west divided town couldn't truly succeed unless all students had equal access to education. Raytown's growth continued through World War II with many businesses opening up along with the need for more housing; however, during the war there was significant community violence which impacted negatively upon raystown's reputation as a peaceful community. Most notably occurred during 1944 when young teenage boys set fire to several cars parked outside their homes following an argument over food parcels their mothers had sent them home with; this event remains one of history's most notorious cases of domestic violence within a small town setting!
