By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in Raytown. In 1865, James Hance purchased 640 acres (2 square miles) south of Raytown from Jethro Crain for $200 dollars. Hance named his new community Hanceville after himself and his brother-in-law, James Sibley Crain. In 1870, allotments were offered for sale within the boundaries of what is now Raytown and about two-thirds of the settlers bought land at this time. The rest sold their holdings later that year or before the start of May 1862 when Arkansas became a United States territory following its statehood on April 14th, 1861 On November 8th 1861 local citizens voted to secede from Missouri due to issues with Kansas' admission as a United States territory without their vote being taken into consideration On January 3rd 1862 Samuel Ladd sold 1/3 interest worth $700 towards creation of an independent school district which would encompass all present day eastern counties including Raystown On February 26th 1862 Josephine Ewing moved her family into 4 lots valued at $1200 eachFor more than 2 years they laborediously collected stones and mortar to build what would eventually become known as Stony Hill School
The first settlers in the area that would become Raytown were farmers who arrived in the 1840s. By 1855, there were 10 families living in what is now Raytown. The town was named for General James Fenton, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became a U.S. Representative from Missouri. In 1857, the name of the town was changed to Springfield after a battle between Union troops and Confederate cavalry near Springfield eventually resulted in a Union victory. In 1865, Springfield merged with nearby Carbondale to form what is today called Missouri City.
