The first commercially successful optical instrument in Raytown was a refractor telescope built by Augustus Pogue in 1892. In 1896, Harry Houdini used it to look through an opening in a cabinet that he had specially built for the purpose. In 1902, Wernher von Braun created the rocket engine that powered Nazi Germany's A-4 Skywarrior aircraft during World War II. Von Braun and his team used their rayguns to fire precision shots down into German cities during the war.
