Sedalia, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. It is located on the banks of the Arkansas River. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. Sedalia is part of Utica, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1836 by members of the Methodist Episcopal Church who had journeyed from Illinois to find new land for their religion. They named their town after a river in Tennessee that they had seen while traveling through that state. The first settler in Sedalia was John Denton and his family who arrived in 1839. Denton built a log cabin and started a flour mill which he operated until his death in 1841. His wife Hettie ran the mill until her death in 1854. Their son Charles Denton took over the business operation until 1861 when he died at age 38 years old. Shortly after Charles' death, another son, John Wesley Dodson (1848-1942), came to Sedalia to take over running the mill and found an early cotton gin near present day Main Street which he operated until its closure in 1902. In 1906, one of Sedalia's most famous citizens, DeWitt Clinton (1851-1929), moved to Sedalia from Hannibal, Missouri and opened a grocery store called "The Gilded Cage" which later became known as Clinton Grocery Co., Inc.. During World War II, local businessmen organized what became known as "The Drive" sales drive to raise money for war efforts - this event helped fund many local businesses with goods they otherwise would not have been able to sell due to wartime rationing policies. In 1964, when Utica School District #1 merged into Utica school district #2 creating one large school system within Utica Township boundaries - Sedalia entered into affiliation with that larger system forming part of its student body even though it continued to maintain its own police department and fire department separate from those of Utica Township government until 1984 when both departments were combined into one single unit underUtICA Police Department/Fire Department auspices.]] Although growth has recently occurred outside of downtown sedalia with several high-rise buildings being constructed on much acreage formerly used for agriculture or rural housing developments - much human activity takes place within historic blocks bounded by I-635 northwest corner First Street east boundary line south boundary line west boundary line - including weekly farmers markets offered Friday & Saturday mornings during daylight hours; numerous business open Wednesday thru Sunday evening 7:00 p m thru 11:00 p m; small but growing number Of arts and crafts galleries & studios offeringGallery space Thursdays 10 am till late $10 per hour + materials fee

Sedalia is a city in Sedalia County, Missouri, United States. The population was 11,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1836 by General David Dixon and named for his daughter-in-law Sarah Sedgwick. A post office called Sedalia was established in 1839, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. The current name of the city is derived from David Dixon's daughter Julia Sedgwick's husband James Senter's family name: "Sedalia" means "peaceful place." The first settler to arrive in what is now Sedalia were two couples who came overland from Illinois on horseback during July 1836. They were Isaac Cook and wife Martha Cook; John Brown and wife Anna Brown; Jacob Perkins and wife Lydia Perkins; Cornelius Keyes and wife Deborah Keyes; Rev. George Hinkleman with four daughters—Hannah (1809–1872), Ann (1810–1865), Sophia (born about 1814), Maria (baptized December 25th, 1815)—and their husbands Nicholas Flournoy (1792–1864) and Timothy Smith (1796–1868). Reverend Hinkleman had come overland with his father-in-law Nicholas Flournoy from New York City on October 14th, 1799 as part of an attempt to settle a dispute between settlers Peter Killeen and John Blair over grazing rights near the confluence of the Mississippian River and Elm Creek near present day Springfield. In 1840 Abraham Lincoln arrived at Batavia on the Ohio River after crossing it during the Expedition of Upper Arkansas led by Lt.-Gov militia Colonel Edward Robinson Jr.. He had been sent west by President George Washington to scout out routes for future railroads across this long stretch of open country which would eventually become Kansas Territory. When he reached Batavia he found that many people living along the river wanted him to build a road so they could get goods to market but he refused because there wasn't enough water available for wagon trains even if he built one. That same year Jesse Benton platted what is now downtown Sedalia on land owned by Daniel Denton east of State Route 54 which became known as Benton Heights today due to its resemblance to thatched roofs seen throughout much of rural Illinois at this time including Batavia . In early 1840s several other men also located parcels east of SR 54 including Solomon Northrup who laid claim to alluvial gold discovered downriver near Quincy while working for Major Pierre Rolland as part of an effort organized by Rolland’s friend William Hull “to lay waste these parts [of] Misouri] before we should surrender our freedom”northwest corner lot still held by current owner south side alley facing south exterior street
