Sedalia is a town in Sedalia County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,381 at the 2010 census. The name comes from "sedate" - meaning "to fall asleep." It was first settled in 1837 and incorporated as a city in 1907. It is now part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The city of Sedalia was founded on July 16, 1837 by Peter Ayer and others as an agricultural outpost near what is now the junction of I-435 and US-60. On October 17, 1837, Ayer led a party of fourteen men westward overland from Sedalia to Fort Smith (now Wichita) in search of new land for his outpost. They found suitable ground along the Shawnee River and began building cabins and trading with Native Americans. On December 3, 1839, Ayer granted charter status to Sedalia to build a city on it lands which had been donated by Daniel Boone. He also erected a brick courthouse and other public buildings. In 1907 Sedalia became fully organized as a municipality with its own government under Mayor Anthony Jordon. During World War II the city produced munitions for the war effort through their production plant at 5th Street & Maplewood Ave., which operated until 1957 when it closed due to economic reasons; however local production continued until 1959 at nearby Park Meadows Plant east of town on US-60 (now called Walmart). There were also small production plants operated by various companies throughout town throughout this time period; one such company that manufactured firearms was White's Guns Company located on Broadway between Elmira Road and I-435 south of town; however this company ceased operations in the late 1990s due to financial difficulties. When Atkins returned to Illinois he brought this game back with him and buried it at Arlington Cemetery where it still remains today as part of that city's major sports event history. A plaque commemorating Atkins' appearance states: "This plaque marks the spot where Chet Atkins played during an exhibition baseball game played at Columbian Park on April 17th, 1859 betweenBaltimore Orioles and Sedalia White Sox." Sedalia residents settled around Glenstone Creek dating back to before their arrival there were any white people living thereabouts by 1840 when three families made their way down from Lebanon Pike on horseback crossing Glenstone Creek bedding into what would become known as "the Ozarks". The family names later became Wellman (1850), Hinson (1852), Slaughter (1856). Hezekiah Wellman laid out First Congregational Church edifice/school building which stood until 1906; post office moved from door next to church to current location about 1865-'67; first radio service here commenced May 15th 1926 by WLWO AM broadcasting experimental short wave broadcast from old school lot across creek bed just north of present day south side sidewalk
