Polk who had been president during much of the American Civil War (1861-1865). These efforts led to large scale violence and displacement among many Native American groups including the Potawatomi, Shawnee, Creek and Chickasaw. Many people from these tribes moved into southeastern Missouri where they founded cities like Utica and Jacksonville before migrating westward into Illinois and Indiana in search of better economic prospects while others remained behind as refugees or captives. In 1839, it was decided by a group of local businessmen that Springfield would be their new hometown due to its location on high ground between Carbondale and Moberly which made it easy to defend against attacks by neighboring townsspeople.
