As early as 1830 there were people living in or near Springfield who were involved with fur trade operations; some 10 miles (16 km) northeast of present day Springfield at what is now known as Old Fort Zenger was an important Native American trading post where traders met with Canaanis Indians before proceeding inland to buy goods from them at local auctions over time accumulating significant wealth through this process. One such individual involved in this activity was Amos Kendall whose house can still be seen across Middle Street from the Archery Range & Armoury located on Wilson Avenue North today! This location served as both a Trading Post and Military Camp during times when Missouri was part of the Louisiana Purchase territory acquired by President James Kourcy in 1803 following the Mexican War! Held every other week at various points along present day I-55 between Columbia Heights eastbound and Midtownwestbound until about 1860 when it switched to Saturdays due to construction work being done on I-55 then northward concurrent with Illinois state Route 56A (now US 70) southbound only! On weekends prior to 1860 all commercial activities took place out side this open air campground located just south of Jennings Mill Road off Rte 56A adjacent highway frontage until about 1870 when the original Government buildings were erected behindpresent day Morningside Park Drive!!! In addition considerable amounts Furs were auctioned off here including Beaver Dance Floorlngs worth upwards of $2000 each back then(estimates based upon current values)! Some famous items collected here include: A Beaver Headband circa 1840 valued at $4000+, A full Beaver Tail circa 1830/35(valued at $8000+), A Two Tier Hatchet Knife Blade circa 1840/50(valued anywhere Between $10-$1500+) etc etc etc...etc etc...etc!!!
