St. Peters, Mo., is a town that has had a lot of history. It was founded in 1824 by Captain James K. Polk and his family as a station on the Missouri Pacific Railroad. The town developed quickly, and by 1830 it had over 100 residents. In 1836, St. Peters was designated as the capital of Missouri Territory because of its importance to the region. The capital was moved to Independence in 1840 due to expenses associated with the relocation. When Kansas became a state in 1861, St. Peters remained its capital until it was made an incorporated city in 1865. After World War II, the population decreased significantly because of emigration to other parts of Missouri and Texas; however, there has been recent growth in the town thanks to new businesses and residences development. The first churches located in St. Peters were Baptist and Methodist; both denominations left after Godfrey Tilton bought land for them in 1834 (he also donated $5,000 for their construction). A smallpox pandemic which hit Missouri during this time caused many deaths from disease; these churches served as makeshift hospitals until1841 when Drs Samuel Mudd and Elijah White donated land for a school which would eventually become American University (now Washington University). Reverend John Burt founded First Presbyterian Church in 1847 although it did not start services until 1850 because he needed more space for his home base on Old Capitol Hill (later renamed Cathedral Park). He started services at what is now Main Street since there wasn’t enough room at Southeast corner York Road (then called Muhammad Ali Boulevard) where he lived originally with his wife Catherine Buffington before moving into their current building on North First Street two years later (the old building still stands today). Reverend John Burt’s son-in-law Charles Finney built Second Presbyterian Church – also known as Finney’s Chapel – on East Broadway between Harrison Avenue and Illinois Avenue between 1865 and 1870 AD when that part of St Petersburg went through heavy reconstruction following Civil War damage inflicted by Confederate forces including bomb attacks on Union soldiers housing inside Fort Donelson National Monument (). This church served as the parish center until 1889 when Holy Cross Episcopal Church replaced it east of Commercial Street (). South Side Presbyterian Church followed suit two years later with services beginning at what is now Third Street near Interstate 44/Exit 128A westbound within two blocks of its original location just south of US Highway 54/Exit 131A northbound (). In 1821, General James K. Polk arrived in St. Peters to become the first U.S. president from Missouri. He traveled through the town and saw that it had been destroyed by a tornado three years earlier. The rebuilt town was renamed for Polk in 1903.
