Town And Country, Missouri was a community in Scott County, Missouri, United States. The community was located on the banks of the River Pipestone at an elevation of 527 feet (151 m). Payne operated a mill there until 1840 when he sold it to Nicholas Griggs. Griggs also built a store and post office there in 1846. In 1847, the community had a school which served grades 1-8. By 1860, all but one of the homes in Town And Country were destroyed by fire. The last home to be destroyed was owned by John Treadwell who moved into it around 1861. In 1865, the Union Army burned down part of Scott County while besieging Vicksburg during the American Civil War. This caused many local businesses and residents to flee for fear of being captured or worse if they remained within Confederate territory; however, some businesses did not leave until after General Robert E Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865. After Reconstruction ended, most people returned to their former lives as farmers or small businessmen elsewhere in Scott County or interstate travel became more common than ever before for goods needed for trade with America's new slave states such as Missouri.

The Town and Country Creamery is still in operation today. It is one of the oldest creameries in Missouri. In 1881, a post office was established in Town And Country. In 1907, the town had a population of 309 people and a schoolhouse. On November 3rd, 1915, during World War I, a munitions plant called the "Atchison Arsenal" was built in the town. It produced shells that were used in World War I. In 1922, whenMissouri became an independent state, the name of the post office changed to Independence (although it continued to be called "townandcountry").
