Town And Country is a small town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,849 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Town And Country was Isaac Griggs, who arrived in 1836. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. The original town was named Griggsville after Isaac's father-in-law. In 1837, Captain John Sutter discovered gold near what is now Town And Country and decided to establish a post there to prospect for wealth. A group of men from nearby Osage City set up camp around Sutter's location and called themselves the Gros Ventres (Big Hands). They mined gold until 1848 when they abandoned the venture because of low grades and lack of capitalization. In 1850, General James Kansa established Fort Dodge at present day Griggsville after his army invaded Kansas during the Mexican American War. The fort served as an interim military base for several months before it was destroyed by elements of Confederate forces on November 15, 1855.(1) In 1861, following the American Civil War, Union soldiers burned down Griggsville's courthouse while occupying the town during its occupation by Confederate forces loyal to Missouri Governor David Rice."(2) In 1865 Union General Ulysses S Grant led an attack against Fort Dodge which resulted in the surrender of all Confederate troops within five miles radius including many women and children among them.(3) After years of being contested between Unionists and Confederates through battles such as Battle Of Hernia Creek and Siege Of Springfield it finally ended with grudging peace treaty on July 9th 1870s when last remaining Confederate soldier surrendered at Plumpton Bluff west side of town then all property within 5 miles radius became Union controlled under terms known as "Greene’s Treaty". At this time most people left because no one wanted to live anywhere near Rebel bases or even friendly civilians.(4) After that war ended things slowly started to change with new arrivals coming into what had been once a battleground between two armies but also created opportunity for economic growth thanks to railroad development which brought more jobs into town.(5) Even today some aspects nonetheless remain unchanged such as agricultural production with over 60% land area still used for farming according to 2006 Census data; however other industries have come and gone like information technology services industry((6)) although much has changed since those days especially concerning demographics with increasing numbers of people living outside traditional farmland areas making it difficult maintain tight social cohesion.(7))
