On January 14th 1965 (the date that Missourian State Normal Institute changed its name to Southern Illinois University Carbondale) southern Illinois Univ’d opened up shop with classes starting on September 12th 1965 inside what would become UI Carbondale’s original Main Building! In 1922 Wm H Piggott donated land east of town near his farm to build a high school which served as both a public high school and Agricultural High School before becoming an all-girls highschool calledMissouri State Normal Institute on October 25th 1959 . In 1819, the Town of Country was organized in Monroe County. The town was named for the location of its first courthouse, which was built on a hill in what is now the city of Springfield. The town grew rapidly and soon had a population of over 100 people. In 1825, the legislature created a township within Monroe County and the town became part of that township. The Town Of Country experienced many changes during its history. In 1850, it became an unincorporated community when it split from the township to form its own separate municipality. In 1912, it seceded from Missouri due to racial discrimination against African Americans and formed the Republic of Davistown (later renamed Black Diamond). It rejoined Missouri in 2013 following passage of Act 611. The Town Of Country is located in western Monroe County betweenSpringfield and Belleville. It lies along U.S Route 494 at an elevation of 479 feet (141 meters). The town has a total area of 23 square miles (60 square kilometers). Its center is located at an elevation of 515 feet (160 meters), making it one of the highest towns in Missouri. 2-square mile parcels are designated as open space while all other land is used for residences and businesses including two golf courses, two shopping malls, four churches and three schools
Town And Country was founded in 1837 by John S. Butler and his wife, Sarah. The town was named after the Butler family's farmstead in rural St. Francois County, Missouri. The couple started a small store and post office in the town, and the first school opened in 1840. In 1846, the town became a part of Springfield Township. The town experienced significant growth during the 19th century due to its location on the Butterfield Overland Mail route from Springfield to Harrisonburg and then on to St Louis. The population of Town AndCountry increased from around 100 people in 1800 to 3,000 by 1870. However, during World War I, many residents left for military service; as a result, the population decreased again until it reached 1,500 people by 1920. During Prohibition period (1929-1933), much of Town AndCountry businesses were closed because prohibition was not legalized in Missouri at that time. In 1937, Town AndCountry incorporated as a city under an act of the state legislature; it has since continued to grow along with its citizenry through annexations into other municipalities throughout its history.
