In 1881, Judge John Blair bought 1,000 acres east of Troy from Daniel Boone for $1,000 cash and renamed it Blairtown after himself and his wife Martha Morton Blair (1847-1911). In 1907, he donated an additional 5,000 acres (2 km²) to the town so that it could become a municipality. Troy's first store opened on Main Street in 1884 by Wm Hargrave & Sons which became one of the most successful businesses in town at that time selling groceries, hardware, saddles and other items related to horse industry along with postcards and other small items. Troy, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of western Missouri. The population was 1,803 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield city-county government and is located on Raccoon River at its junction with Bigfork Road. The early history of Troy is obscure, but it may be that it was founded by two Arab traders, Ibrahim and Abu Bakr al-Husseini, in 1815 as a summer trading post on the river's edge. In 1820, when Missouri became an American state, Troy became part of Hernando County. In 1827, when Hernando County was merged into Boone County, Troy became a part of that county as well. The first settler in what would become Troy was John McCoy from Illinois who arrived there in 1829 after traveling through Arkansas and Kansas City to find land for his family. McCoy built a log cabin on the east bank of Raccoon River near present day Highway 9 and started farming some corn and beans which he sold to local farmers until 1830 when he moved his family to the more central location on Bigfork Road where they continued farm operations until 1840 when they opened a store which continued operation until 1865 when big business failure caused their closure. In 1868–69 there were several floods which destroyed most homes in town so no one lived there during those years; however many oral histories survive about these events which show how much importance water played in local life then as it does today. Around this time taverns began operating throughout town with customers coming from miles around for drinks before going home to their farms or businesses back upriver or further down the river so local commerce thrived despite low levels of transportation available across the state then compared to now! By 1870–71 only 8 houses remained within town limits while most residents had either relocated away or left due to economic reasons such as changes in prices for goods brought over by railroads etc.; however some people did stay including Judge John Fenton who soon developed an extensive agricultural empire based primarily around raising hogs and other livestock. This period also saw construction begin on Grannis Ferry Bridge (now Interstate 44) across the Raccoon River just south of town center crossing traffic off main Street Washburn Avenue onto Ferry Rd leading into downtown Springfield; this bridge would remain operational until 1970 when it was replaced by Interstate 64! A few years later school began teaching upriver (at Thataway Missionary Baptist Church) using Native Americans who had been taken captive along with teachers from nearby Hannibal Normal School during Indian School Warsbler Rebellion! One notable resident during this time was Methodist minister Wiley Epps who served from 1870–72; he helped create Trinity Episcopal Church (later Olivet Nazarene United Presbyterian church) just north of town center preceded by another Methodist pastor known as Wylie Earp whose long tenure beginning in 1879 led him to nickname "The Father" among locals! Eventually grocer Jeptha Barnes bought property adjoining Fenton’s farmstead bringing new life both inside and outside Town limits; Barnes operated a grocery store next door to Grannis Ferry Bridge all through the late 1800s until his death in 1950!! All told there are over 100 documented buildings/ structures associated with Troy’s early history including churches / religious organizations such as Trinity Episcopal Church mentioned above plus schools / colleges / universities such as Hernando County Seminary & Park University all established between 1870-1890!!!
