Troy, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks region of Missouri. It is located on the banks of the Osage River. The population was 3,569 at the 2000 census. Troy consists of two villages: Troy and West Plains. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Troy were white men from Illinois who came in 1836. They named their new village after General George Washington 's home state, Virginia. The village had a population of about fifty people when it was platted out in 1838 by farmers John Witherspoon and James Hickey. In 1840, Mayor Isaac Todd sold land to Andrew Jackson for $1,000 which became known as Jackson's Purchase because it included all that is now Troy. The first school was built in 1841 and students attend public schools until 1870 when private schools were established. In 1876, a post office called Troy was established with mail service coming from Springfield through Dawson City until 1865 when the railroad came through and supplies stopped coming so the post office closed down. In 1904, the name change to West Plains due to an agreement between local farmers and city officials that no man or woman should own more than one acre of land within three miles of any other house or business without giving consent; this policy continued until 1945 when it changed back to Troy after being protested by some residents who felt they had been taken advantage of since then by larger landowners who could easily move their properties around without needing permission from anyone else The commercial center for western Missouri has shifted from Springfield to Decatur over time due mainly to Interstate 44 . However, there are still some businesses located in downtown Troy that date back to before Interstate 44 ever moved into town including Kmart (now part of Sears) which opened its doors on December 5th 1954 and was one of the few stores open during both World Wars II A large shopping mall called Dotson Mall opened up next door on east side Of Highway 63 in 2005 just north of I-44 making it easier for drivers traveling westbound onto I-64 but not possible going eastbound as Dotson Mall overlapped with highway lanes
