Troy is a town in the US state of Missouri. The population was 8,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Located on the east bank of the river MISSOURI, Troy was platted in 1836 by Captain John C. Fremont, who named it for his friend and mentor General Armstrong Auld. The first settler in what today is Troy was David Denton, who arrived in 1837 and built a log cabin on the north side of the river. Denton's house still stands there and is currently used as a museum by local residents. In 1839, George Catlett founded Catlett's Mill on the south bank of the river opposite present-day Troy University; this mill produced flour until it closed in 1886 due to competition from larger mills across Illinois and Kentucky. In 1840, James Wofford established an gristmill on Dearborn Street northeast of present-day downtown Troy; this mill continued to grind corn until 1953 when it was replaced by a new mill which now operates as a hotel/motel complex called "The Olde Worlde". Wofford also founded what is now known as Western State Bank which opened its doors in 1842 and remains one of downtown Troy’s most popular attractions today. In 1850, Nathaniel Lyon organized what became known as The National Guard company from men from various counties within Missouri under leadership of Colonel Thomas Pakenham; this company served with distinction during both Union and Confederate military campaigns throughout 1861-1865. In 1865, following Missouri's admission into the Union as a state, much activity took place within what would become Troy including early efforts to founding a school (the first beinggraded high school classes were offered at Central High School located just east of downtown), building churches (St Bartholomew's Episcopal Church located near Interstate 70), establishing taverns and restaurants (The Dry Goods store located off Main Street) and forming businesses such as Hartsfield-Jackson Air Force Base Logistics Complex Incorporated or HWBG Associates - later renamed Spectrum Technologies Corporation - created to develop technology related fields adjacent to I-70 through acquisition or development of patents or other intellectual property rights covering helicopter/aircraft design., among others! On December 6th 1865 – Thanksgiving day – General Ulysses S Grant visited local settlers at Catlett's Mill after marching into Mexico City pursuant to Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation! Afterward Grant ordered Administration buildings constructed on Capitol Hill Grounds east of downtown where he stayed until January 9th when he returned home via train! On that date general term ended & Ulysses S Grant took office becoming President Abraham Lincoln effective January 20th 1863 upon Douglas' assassination! Although many people mistakenly believe that General Ulysses S Grant never set foot in town again we can learn quite another story… over time several businesses operated out front despite no legal business license being issued!! Finally on February 14th 1870 – 3 years after leaving office & 10 months after giving birth to their only child Jennie –Ulysses S Grant returned home via steamboat docked outside old central square...and proceeded directly up main street past all those establishments…to arrive right atWhere his mother resided!! A more complete account follows: On November 6th 1865 while attending ball at Armory Hotel west side OF Downtown StLOUIS MO I saw large groupof Men headed towards my HouseI went outside saw Capt John Fremont He said go ahead build your own house here" so I did! That same day while I was inside having dinner My Mother got News sayingGeneral Ulysses S grant had come down To Springfield IL And direct Me how To React So I wentOutsideTo see him & he Said Go Ahead build Your Own House Here Then inside When I came Out He Said Come Back In 10 Minutes Or You Can Build A House Anyhow So We Did What He said & Inside Found His Mother Who Was very Glad To Meet Him!" Troy, Missouri is a city in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 10,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Troy was founded in 1836 by fur traders and early settlers as a trading post on the Arkansas River. A small community developed near the present-day intersection of US Highway 6 and US Highway 61. On November 1, 1854, Troy was designated as an incorporated town by an act of the Legislature; it became a municipality on December 15, 1914. Today's Troy began to form around 1900 when James Waddell erected a wagon trail from Independence to Topeka through what is now Shawnee Park and built a tollgate at what is now Randolph Street for goods traffic coming into or leaving Missouri from Illinois and Iowa. The first settler in what would become Troy was George Moon who arrived with his family in 1836 from Canada along with three other families. In 1840 he married Eliza Ewing of Springfield Township east of Topeka and together they westwardly moved until they located at what would become Troy about 1850 on land that had been bought by Drury Fenton from Solomon Peterson for $2 per acre (about $ today). In 1854, after much discussion among those who were interested in developing this location due to its potential as both a cattle stop for travelers heading north via US 61 and access to timber resources located within miles of where they stood - including some extensive holdings along the Arkansas River - commissioners voted unanimously to incorporate as a town under state law which took effect on November 1st that year with residents electing one member each starting out at $5 per day ($100/$1600 then) while others continued to pay annually until 1860 when their number reached 25 members making it an elected town under state law with voting privilege extended also pro hac vice up until 1880 when elected officials were unelected because all men over 21 years old were required by state law then to serve Term lengths set at four years beginning on January 1st following election campaigns late into that year - thus ending any possibility someone like James Waddell might have served twice consecutively as mayor! Troy was founded in 1836 by a group of farmers led by John Smeaton. The town grew quickly, and in 1851 it became the capital of the newly formed Missouri Territory. In 1865, Troy was renamed Jefferson City after President Andrew Johnson. The city experienced some growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s, but declined in popularity during the Great Depression. It regained some popularity during the late 1990s through development of downtown Troy, as well as new housing developments around I-55 and US-71.
