Troy, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The population was 7,891 at the 2010 census. Troy is home to the United States Air Force Academy and is one of only two communities in Missouri with a college-level education program for primary and secondary students. The other community is Columbia, which hosts several universities. The first white settlers in what became Troy were farmers who arrived around 1820. By 1825, there were six families living in what is now Troy. In 1827, the town was platted and named after General Andrew Jackson's victory at Battle of New Orleans that year. The first school in Troy was built on the current site of Main Street in 1830. It was called "Union High School." In 1862, during the American Civil War, three sets of Union soldiers under Major General John Custer fought near Troy while supplies were being transported east to join forces with Confederate General Robert Ewing at Vicksburg. This battle is commemorated by a statue located on State Route 24 south of town (now US Highway 158). The post office opened in 1851 and remained open until it closed on December 16, 1958; its last mailbag was delivered October 10th from Springfield, Missouri to Troy! In 1907, Clarence King donated land adjacent to his farm for what would become Central High School; it opened September 1908 as one of the original schools in still operating public institutions throughout Missouri! In 1951–1952 Central High School moved from its original location across from US Highway 159 into an all new building designed by noted architect Lloyd Wright! That same year also saw construction begin on Western Illinois University's campus adjacent toCentral High School - this would become home to many major programs over ensuing years including music education & law enforcement training for MO state troopers! There have been numerous expansions & renovations associated with both CU Central & WIU since then – see attached photos (& map) for some idea of just how extensive these various projects have been :-) !! !! Today’s Troy has evolved tremendously over its centuries-long history – much like our citizens themselves!!! Today’s economy is based largely upon agriculture as well as manufacturing/services/trade – very complementary workforces that continue to thrive here!! With such a diverse history & Municipality coming together so dynamically each day towards something positive (& sustainable), I believe we can achieve even more!!!! Troy, Missouri is a city in Washington County, Missouri, United States. The population was 6,848 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Washington County and the only municipality in Washington County. Troy was founded on December 7, 1839 by John A. McClendon and others from Granite City, Illinois as a town named for its location on the eastern bank of the White River. Troy's first store was built on Main Street in what is now the business district of Troy. On October 11, 1840, when Lewis Cass became President of the United States and selected Missouri as his home state, he officially designated Troy as the new capital of Missouri. The Territorial Legislature voted to rename it Independence on November 17th of that year in order to reflect Kansas' admission into Confederation that same day. The original courthouse was destroyed by fire on December 7, 1841; but a new courthouse was completed within two months and opened on January 3rd of 1842. In 1852, Congress passed an act authorizing “the erection …of public buildings” in Troy; these included a jail and court house which were dedicated March 4th of that year. The post office at Troy began operations on July 1st of 1853 under name Independence Post Office (later renamed Eureka). In 1870–71: Turpin-Laughlin Mill constructed about one mile east-northeast (now northwest corner lot with Second Street) off I-435 between US 36W and US 67W near present day Ramey Road; this mill operated until 1902 when it caught fire which destroyed most records associated with it including plans etc.; thereafter it was abandoned & left to fall into disrepair; also located just southwest (northwest corner lot next door to Laughlin Mill), formerly woodworking factory/shop where coal burning started around 1830 & continued until 1903 when it too caught fire probably due to overloading caused by overpumping during prohibition era This particular mills building still stands today (& has been restored)
