Troy, Missouri is a city in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Troy was founded in 1836 by John Henniker and James Dixon as a stop on stagecoach routes between Independence (Kansas) and Topeka (Kansas). In 1853, the town was renamed after General George Armstrong Custer when he visited the area to tour military engagements during the Mexican-American War. The first post office in Troy was established in 1837, and it remained open until 1870. The first store in Troy was built on Main Street in 1840 by Hiram Giddings. In 1860, Abel Ainsworth opened a grocery store on Main Street near present day Interstate 435th Street. Ainsworth continued to operate his business until his death in 1912. In 1865, Samuel Morse opened a shoe store on Third Avenue near First Streets east of Center Road for sale of shoes to soldiers stationed at Fort Lyon (later Fort Riley). Morse operated his business until 1892 when he moved it to Springfield Boulevard north of I-435th Street where he kept it until his death in 1942. It wasn’t until 1901 that electric streetlights were installed throughout town following an effort led by Mayor Augustus Earp and others to improve public lighting across the state of Missouri during this time period called “The Electric Light epoch” which also included advances such as telephones and air conditioning making life easier for residents throughout the entire country during this era; unfortunately there are few records or archives remaining from this time period so all information about Troy Municipal Lights history can only be gleaned through oral histories or research done outside of Morrison County Library Archives located within downtown property boundaries less than one mile away from where community members grew up while living south side streets bordering our communities while being able to access current technology including Internet resources available today via computers with satellite services available 24/7 over wide area network; however what we can provide today allows us understand how important these community based activities were within their local government structures that allowed for development strategies that focused upon economic vitality within our townships without sacrificing other important needs such as education, transportation infrastructure maintenance & improvement programs etc.; thus allowing citizens who have access today to have their voice heard which hopefully will lead to future projects or initiatives that may bring new life into these abandoned buildings or neighborhoods thereby giving hope for change but always under threat due largely to lack of awareness about what is taking place within their own borders
Troy, Missouri was founded by the family of Isaac Troy in 1812. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Mississippi River and its access to timber and water resources. In 1846, the Union Army destroyed most of Troy during the Battle of Fort Donelson, which resulted in the loss of many lives. After the battle, Abraham Lincoln announced that he would be moving the capital from Springfield, Illinois to Baltimore, Maryland. The decision caused a large backlash in Troy because they felt that their city had been unfairly taken away. The community slowly recovered and received new development over time. In 1958, it became an official municipality within St Louis County.
