Troy, Missouri is a town located in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,826 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of St. Francois County and the second largest city in the county after Hermannstadt. The incorporated village of Troy had a population of 2,564 as of the 2010 census. The first people to inhabit Troy were Native Americans who lived on the east bank of the Verdigris River. The area became part of France during the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and was named for General James K. Polk because he was then military governor of that region at that time. French traders and farmers arrived in what is now Troy about 1800 and began developing its land into an agricultural center with corn production becoming one of its main exports around this time. By 1827, there were eight mail stations in southeastern Missouri due to railroads being built near that time; three out of which served Troy (the other five were Decatur, Springfield, Harper Ferry and Jacksonville). In 1861 when Civil War began, nearby Hannibal moved their army from Independence to join Confederate forces northward along the Illinois-Missouri border under General Ulysses S Grant; however, they did not cross into Missouri until late September when they reached Osceola Heights outside present day Troy due to lack thereof pontoon bridges over swollen streams flooding into central Missouri during autumn rainsstorms known as Monsoons according to some historians A skirmish took place on October 11th near modern day Clinton where Confederates burning homes fought Union troops under attacks by Brigadier General John Wofford leading up to Battle Of Corinth which would later result in total loss for Confederate forces including nearly 1/3 million dollars worth instruments taken from Schofield Barracks Army Ammunition Depot at or near modern day Harrisonburg south side street just eastbound off I-435 exit ramp before junction with US Bluff Rd., 12 miles northeast (R) from downtown Harrisonburg On November 3rd 1865 while Union troops under command MajorGeneral Samuel Jourdan are deployed between Lebanon Mississippi & Carthage Alabama on Jamesville Pike right flank attacking Rebel cavalry outpost led by LtCol Sterling Price killed 6 men including Capt Elisha Henson commander $1500 captured good war stores plus 4 cannon etc resulting also in total loss for Confederate force 135 casualties with 10 officers & 100 enlisted men losses most serious being LtCols William Troup (6 officer & 24 enlisted fatalities), Joseph Ellis (4 officer & 16 enlisted fatalities), Albert Sidney Johnston (2 officer & 8 enlisted fatalities).
