Webb City, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks of southwestern Missouri. It has a population of just over 6,000 people and it is the county seat for Wilson County. The name Webb City was given to the community by Colonel James Webb, who served as United States Ambassador to Great Britain from 1961-1963. The first settlers in Webb City were families from Kentucky and Tennessee. The men set out from their settlements in 1839 and arrived in what is now Wilson County on May 25, 1839. They built log cabins near where they would live until 1865 when they relocated to present day Webb City. At that time, the area around Webb City became known as “Tillman’s Bottom” because it was here that Captain John Tillman founded what is today Tillman University. In 1862, General Robert Ewell pushed northward through Wilson County and discovered land which would become Webb City. On October 1, 1862, General Ewell named the new community after him – Webb City after Colonel James Webb of Great Britain who had Serve as US Ambassador to Great Britain during his time there. In 1863, Major General George Armstrong Custer invaded Indian Territory and came across a Sioux village at Black Hills National Monument near where we now sit and destroyed it without Warning or battle! This event forever changed America’s view of Indians! But before you get too worked up about this story….. nope… nothing interesting happened at Black Hills National Monument after Custer’s visit! The site remained unoccupied until 1907 when an oil well was drilled there (the first such exploration ever done in that part of Oklahoma!). After some additions and alterations over time (most notably construction of a city hall), Webb City officially became its own municipality on December 2nd 1949! The Higginbothams lived there until they sold it to Harry Beavers in 1978; Beavers used it as an agricultural research station until he vacated it in 1984 due to health concerns about heavy use of lead and other contaminants within the building). In 1865, Jno Crain opened a grocery store on Main Street which became one of the area's most popular businesses through its many incarnations over the years including: (1)CG Grocery & Clothing Store (1925-1991), CJ's Place (1927-2007), Myrtle's Mercantile (1930s-1960s), Mrs.'s Hardware (1945-2006), First State Bank (1976-) and finally Webber's Gourmet Market which ceased operations on October 1st 2006 after more than 50 years!. The city was named for General James MCLANTY webb who fought at Vicksburg during American Civil War where he received 3 brevet promotions including brevet brigadier general rank upon returning home!
