Wentzville is a small town in the Ozarks of southeastern Missouri. It was founded in 1821 by George Wentz, a captain in the Union army during the American Civil War. The town was named for Colonel Samuel Wentz, an officer in General John Custer's cavalry brigade. The first gun in Wentzville was a 10-pounder cannon that served as part of the militia forces of the town until 1864. The first store opened in 1864 and later became known as "Guns & Ammo." In 1880, two companies of Volunteer Cavalry were organized and moved to Wentzville from nearby Easton. The company name changed to "Wentzville Mounted Rifles" and remained there until 1903 when it merged with another volunteer unit to form the present day "Wentzville Volunteers". In 1919, Winchester Ammunition Company arrived in Wentzville and began producing ammunition here starting with pump shotguns used by local farmers. By 1930, Winchester had produced over 100 million rounds of ammunition here. In 1941, Radio Corporation of America (RCA) established its presence in Wentzville when it began selling radios here from their plant on Main Street. At this time, radio sales were an important part of marketing WZVXV-TV which at that time operated out of what is now known as Olde Town Hall square downtown. RCA also established a factory complex east of town where they produced televisions for many years until they switched to digital production back home in 2003; WZVXV discontinued live programming on their station around that time too! In 1957, Peabody Arms Company came into town and began manufacturing rifles and handguns here under the name Peabody Arsenal Incorporated (PAA). After several years production ceased due to World War II restrictions on firearms production within the United States but resumed after repeal of those restrictions six months later; PAA continued operations until 1996 when it merged with National Firearms Co.(NFC) forming NFC/PAA which still produces firearms today while continuing operation outof wenttzvillencityhall #2 located just off main street next door!
