The town prospered due to the production of hay, corn, flour, and other crops. In the 1870s, West Plains experienced a significant population growth due to the influx of Germans who had come to America during the American Civil War. At this time, West Plains became known as the "Germans' Town." The town's fortunes changed again in the 1920s when Prohibition began to take hold in America. Many businesses closed down as a result of prohibition and poverty rose in West Plains. However, by 1930 West Plains had recovered and became an important community again. In the 1940s and 1950s, West Plains saw a significant increase in methamphetamine addiction due to World War II shortages of heroin. This led to increased police activity which caused some property damage. However, by 1960 West Plains had regained its previous prosperity and was one of America's most prosperous small towns. Today, despite some recent challenges such as methamphetamine addiction and decline in agriculture (due to global economic changes), West Plains remains an important community with strong ties to its history.
West Plains was founded in 1832 by Captain James Wilkinson and his wife, Eliza. The town was named after the settler's home on the West Plains River. In 1836, Wilkinson organized a Methodist church in West Plains. In 1851, Wilkinson donated land to build a courthouse and jail in West Plains. The courthouse and jail were completed in 1857 and are still used today. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant visited West Plains and ordered all of Missouri to be readmitted to the Union as part of the Compromise of 1865. After the war ended, West Plains grew rapidly due to its new jobs opportunities. By 1890, Western Missouri had over 100 businesses with a total payroll of $1 million dollars.
