West Plains, Missouri is a census-designated place in St. Joseph County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The community was named for pioneer settlers John and Mary West who came from Illinois in 1818. They established a small town near present day West Plains on the north side of the River Jozefsberg about two miles east of where it flows into Kansas City proper. The first store in what would become West Plains was built by John Wetherbee on State Street in 1825. In 1830, James Fenton purchased land northeast of present day West Plains and development began along his Road de la Prairie which became known as "Fenton Boulevard." In 1854, General Order No. 9 ordered all Native American Indians living east of the Alleghenies to leave their homes or be Pocahontas'ketched retaliation against white settlers encroaching upon their territory; this order led to many local Indian wars and retaliations that continued until 1865 when Ulysses S. Grant signed Executive Order 12802 providing for Indian removal to reservations west of Arkansas River. By 1865 over 2 million people had been removed from Missouri including most of the western half of St Joseph County consisting of what is now West Plains and portions of other communities such as Blue Springs, Pawnee Heights and Hillsboro Township (now Ferguson). When Kansas City was founded in 1855 much larger areas were explored by early city fathers including David Jackman who bought land east of Topeka on which he erected an elegant brick courthouse square that still stands today; jackman's grandson still resides there with his family In 1886 JW Post moved his operations to what is now called "Prairie View A&M University" across I-435 from downtown Kansas City after purchasing 6 acres (2 ha) Northwest corner lot previously occupied by several Dodge Brothers stores; this university remains one today with more than 100 buildings including its main campus building prairieviewamuniversitycom

West Plains, Mo., is a town in Johnson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,879 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. West Plains was founded in 1836 by a group of Mormon settlers who were displaced by the Mexican–American War and their move to Illinois. The first post office in West Plains was established in 1837. In 1868, the town became the seat of Johnson County when it was organized from parts of Greene and Washington counties. West Plains has a history that goes back over 200 years. The town began as a small community near Springfield on the banks of the Missouri River. early pioneers were Mormons who had been displaced by war and political unrest in Illinois; they decided to establish themselves in what would be their new home country – what is now Missouri. When news reached them of an impending Mexican invasion of Mexico, some members left for California while others fought with General Santa Anna’s army against Mexico at Chiapas; these Latter-day Saints (LDS) encountered great difficulty finding land suitable for farming because most of southern Texas had already been leased to Mexicans as part of General Antonio López de Santa Anna’s ambitious plan to expand Mexico’s territory northward beyond its present boundaries (see also Texan Revolution). A few brave men took up arms and built cabins along nearby White Sands Creek during this period; but it would be many more years before any permanent settlement could form near where we now stand on Route 8 east of downtown Springfield – only 10 miles west from where Nauvoo refugees settled after fleeing religious persecution in Nauvoo (Decatur County), Ill., which became West Plains on July 24, 1836 following Indian removal operations authorized by Brigham Young under order from President John Quincy Adams (Julius Cæsar Grant)). The original plat for West Plains included all present-day Johnson County except what are now Springdale and Hillsboro Township; these towns were consolidated with Johnson County on November 3rd, 1861 due to growing population density within Jacksonian Kansas Territory since Kansas Territory had been admitted into the Union as a state two days earlier on October 15th via proclamation by Ulysses S. Grant Jr..
