They found that this area did not have any good land available so they started farming themselves rather than waiting for someone else to buy it from them. This early agriculture helped develop what would become one of the most important aspects of local culture: self-reliance. The city of West Plains was founded on May 2, 1901 by Mayor John Ahern with help from other officials from nearby towns such as Independence and Jacksonvilleville. At its inception, West Plains had a population of just over 100 people but quickly grew due to its importance as a Hub for Commerce and Education within Jackson County (then Kansas). By 1930, when it reached its peak population size with over 1,000 residents living in downtown streetscape buildings along State Street between First Avenue South and Main Street North – much like today’s downtown – it had become one of America’s largest cities! Although growth slowed during World War II dueto wartime restrictions on commerce (a common problem during those days), by 1955 City Council voted unanimously to annex adjacent rural communities which included Reston (now Arlington) Today there are only around 50 residents remaining who live primarily off agriculture or their own businesses which include some small grocery stores, several driving schools, three churches/synagogues (one being affiliated with The Ark Encounter), three restaurants/bars/cafés (+ one new opened recently!), one doctor’s office (+ four new patients since January 2018), two banks (!), a library (+ three new books added since January 2018), plus many heritage buildings dating back centuries including an old school house that still stands today
