Wildwood, Missouri is home to the world’s first rifle match. On July 9th, 1876, a team of men from Wildwood won the first modern rifle match in America with a Winchester Model 1875. The event was sanctioned by the American Rifle Association and was held at what is now the old Union Depot on Main Street. At that time, Wildwood had just a handful of residents and was known as a rural outpost on the edge of town. Today, Wildwood is an agricultural center with over 100 businesses and over 50 miles of roadways. The population has grown to over 10,000 and there are now several dozen businesses within walking distance of each other. The history of ammunition began in Wildwood when early pioneers discovered shotgun shells being shipped from Philadelphia via boat from New York City. Because shotguns were not allowed to be carried into war zones, these projectiles were needed for local shootouts between farmers and frontier Rangers. A store was opened in Wildwood in 1881 by Wm. Killion who became one of the earliest suppliers of ammunition to Kansas Territorial Militia and later sold his business to Elisha Gray Sr., who established an Ammunition Company in 1886 which continued to supply ammunition throughout Missouri until 1953 when it merged with Brownells Corporation Ammunition prices have always been highly influenced by market demand and production costs associated with different types of firearms including rifles, pistols and shotguns

Wildwood, Missouri is a town located in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. The first settler in Wildwood was John Hines who arrived in 1839. He and his family were the first to settled around what is now the intersection of Main Street and Park Avenue. In 1840, Nicholas Clark arrived with his family from Kentucky and platted what is now Wildwood on land that he had bought from the wildcatcher killer known as Kit Carson. George Wurtzel also settled in this area soon after coming to America from Germany in 1847. One of early businesses in Wildwood was a store operated by Noah Kline which opened its doors on Main Street on July 6th, 1849. In 1851, settlers started arriving from Illinois via wagons and trains into what is now St. Francois County; some of these people founded small communities such as West Plains (1852), Orangeville (1853), Indianola (1855), or White Sands (1857). By 1860 there were over 100 residents living in Wildwood according to one report . In 1865 an express wagon road ran through Wildeood connecting Kansas City with Independence and other nearby settlements making it possible for farmers to sell goods directly to consumers instead of going through suppliers like merchants did at that time In 1870 Julius Wirtz established a gin manufacturing business near where Main Street meets Park Avenue today called “Wirtz” Gin Company which still stands today producing gins under their current name - Herbig & Wirtz Gins Incorporated - making them one of only two remaining gin companies still active within America dating back to the 1800s ! In 1876-77Wildwood hosted the annual fairknown locally as “the great event” which attracted upwards of 10,000 visitors !! during this time period many new homes were built including notable examples like Wyandotte House (now known as Wyandotte National Historic Site) constructed in 1880 and Home Place barn/garden complex built circa 1888-89 now used as apartments/condos
Wildwood was founded in 1835 and became a town in 1867. It was named for the wild wood in the area. Wildwood had a post office from 1837 to 1865. The town was chartered on October 14, 1867, and had a population of 100 people.
