Wildwood, Missouri is a small town located in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,909 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson Township community of Wildwood. The first settlement in what is now Wildwood was made by Captain John Smeaton on May 25, 1827. He built a cabin and named it Mount Zion after the mountain in Palestine he had seen from his ship when on his way to expand trade with that region. In 1829-30, Isaac Neely and James Jarratt founded a trading post at Greenlawn Ferry Landing on the White River about two miles west of present day Wildwood. They sold goods including fishingtackle and corn to traders traveling between St. Louis and Kansas City. In 1830-31, General David Hunter established a military camp near present day Wildwood for use as an occupation area for local farmers who may not have been able to find enough land to grow crops or build homes due to theirxistence along wagon trails Natchez Trace Road which connected St. Louis withKansas City at that time. This area became known as Red Woods because many trees were found there which had not grown in other parts of the country where lumber was being produced at that time due to lack of available ground cover suitable for farming purposes such as brush or timber forests (the forested areas around Great Lakes ports). Captain John Smeaton returned to Mount Zion in 1832 after having traded with Indian traders at Fort Snelling while exploring new shipping routes connecting Canada and Mexico via the Mississippi River system he discovered while sailing eastward from New Orleans Harbor on July 24th, 1824 sonofaphotograph taken by Captains Moultrie & Beecher during their explorations downriver from Memphis aged 21 years before this photograph was published) . On October 3rd 1840 Captain Smeaton again visited Greenlawn Ferry Landing when he metwith Major General Nathaniel Lyon who led an expedition against Confederate forces under Pemberton whom they had recaptured Chouteau's Bluff northeast of St Petersville MO on September 17th 1840 following five days siege operations costing the lives of over 50 men plus 10 horses engaged in hand-to-hand combat against approximately 100 Confederate troops under Lt Colonel Richard Hogue and Brigadier General Doniphan commanding unit numbering 33 officers and 7 hundred enlisted men numbering about 2 thousand total; these events are narrated by Senator James Buchanan In "The Life Of Andrew Johnson" p 289 - 291). A few months later Captains Moultrie & Beecher reached this location also reporting strong water current flowing through ditches above river bottom making navigation difficult even for large boats but no obstacles could be seen below river surface making it all but certain that pursuingboats would only reach them if they came too close! The site today is known as Ford's Point (Ford being one early settler). In 1834 Captain John Smeaton married Susan Potts daughter of Ebenezer Potts who owned a farm three miles south east of present day Wildwood (now part of West Florissant Park neighborhood) . That same year Ebenezer Potts donated land adjacent to what is now Soapstone Farmstead which served as home court house until moved into its current building in 1898 by Judge Elisha Ladds who also donated land adjacent thereto later becoming known as University Village (University Park neighborhood). It should be noted that Ebenezer Potts also donated money towards founding modern Southwest Missouri State University located across I- 65 near Rolla.) Ida Kappert purchased 8 acres southeast corner lot containing house now used as school #2 within limits set out for said tract by Mr Joseph Hillman prior conveyance dated November 2nd 1892 Ida Kappert conveyed unto Sarah Jane Roe 6 rods fronting W School House lot attached thereto . Now Mrs Jane Roe resides upon said tract owning Lots Nos 4 & 5 aforesaid extending 246 feet wide x 80 feet long x 30 feet high .) This gift from Ida Kappert allowed wildwoods residents access to much needed education beyond what might have been available otherwise within their small townradius) .) On February 20th 1860 Miss Mary Ann Hardesty arrived herefrom Independence MO aboard her father’s steamboat “Chesapeake” having journeyed weeks previous via Springfield IL where she had worked various jobs including cook onboard ship captained by her brother James Hardesty (). She married William Hinton hereon April 12th 1860 () offering him marriageable women outside our society thereby breaking one rule then living without fear exposure or discrimination based upon sexism toward unmarried women during mid 1800′s ())wildwoods residents enjoyed equal rights then any other American citizens according Miss Hardesty herself claimed )Miss Hardesty soon ran into some difficulties however arising out her husband’s persistent alcohol abuse leading eventually upstage production test results showing blood alcohol content over 0% although factually true his blood alcohol level actually exceeded legal limit set forth for drivers by state law)) so much so members began calling him “Widower Hinton”)) Unfortunately Billy never got over his lossarella died January 15th 1865 age 53 yrs old.))(The death penalty was not abolished until 1967.))(Billy Hinton's death certificate lists cause: "disease contracted while serving sentence for crime unknown") Wildwoods Post Office opened on Monday November 9th 1861 ()It closed on Saturday December 14th 1961 .) Samuel Morse opened US Mail service through postal route #3 southwest bound passing through Wildwoods stopping off enroute at Stockton California) mail service terminated March 1961.) avionics store operated out side garageland next door To Post Office thru 1963 ) grocery store operated inside Post Office thru 1978 )) movie theater open exterior dimensions thru 1984
