Wildwood, Missouri is a small town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,594 at the 2000 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The community was founded by men from Holland in 1836 and named for wild woods near Amsterdamsche Poort (now Wildwood), Netherlands. The first post office opened in Wildwood on December 12, 1836. In 1839, the current courthouse was built and named for John Witherspoon Wildwood, Jr., an early settler who had come to the area from Holland in 1836 as a surveyor for his father-in-law's new farm west of St. Peters Township. In 1850, James Fenton bought land east of town and established what became known as Fentonville; this name survives to this day as a separate development within Wildwood itself. In 1870, wild woods were renamed "Winchester" after Sir Walter Scott's novel "Winchester Castle". At that time Winchester also contained one of only two steamboats connection between St Louis and offshore oil platforms off New Orleans Point – the other being the SS Missouri (later USS Mississippi) which connected Mobile Bay with Deepwater Cove during World War II. In 1907, most of what is now called Main Street in WildWood was added to the National Register of Historic Places; it has since been amended several times including once again in 2007 to reflect its historical significance as an important commercial corridor linking downtown St Louis with rural areas inland As more people moved into centralStLouisand began moving away from agriculture towards services such as retail or professional businesses – restaurants started opening up along Main Street providing opportunities for pedestrians to meet people while shoppers patronized local merchants
