The climate in this area is classified as semi-arid. The first settlers to the area were people who arrived on horseback from Kansas in 1855. They were followed by farmers who settled near the mouth of the Platte River and began raising crops. In 1907, a post office was established in Kearney and mail service was extended to town in 1912. A branch line was built from Kearney to Perkinsburg in 1915 and passenger service ended in 1960. In 1969, an ordinance was passed which allowed for the construction of a shopping center on property east of town that would serve as a anchor for the community. This led to the growth of downtown Kearney and its current appearance. In 1984, it became illegal for anyone under 21 years old to drink alcohol without a parent or guardian present while driving within city limits; this law remains today. Today, downtown Kearney is home to several businesses including two large banks, four restaurants/cafeterias, three stores (including oneanchor store), two bars/liquor stores, and one nightclub/entertainment complex called "The Comeback." As well as several parks including Oneonta Park and North Central Park West overlooking Interstate 80. There are also several small churches located throughout town which offer religious services both morning and evening hours each week during daylight hours only; these services are not open tothe public during nighttime hours due to safety concerns arising from underage drinking patterns prevalent locally within this community

Kearney is a town in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,662 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha–Council Bluffs–Hawkeye City metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1868 by Mormon settlers and named for General Kearny, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first store in Kearney opened on May 12, 1868. On July 5, 1870, the first post office was established at Kearney. The town grew rapidly due to its location and access to water available from the Missouri River. By 1875, Kearney had a school and two churches. In 1886, a hotel called the "Pioneer" was built and served as the town's main center of attraction until it burned down in 1902. In 1907, developers built a sawmill that would become one of Kearney's most important economic assets. The mill continued to operate until it closed in 1971; however, it has left an influence on nearby businesses including several restaurants and nightlife venues that have been located near the mill complex since its closure. Kearney's importance as an agricultural center declined after World War II but revived during THE GRAVITY ERA with new development along Highway 6 north of town which included several large subdivisions housing thousands of people soon followed by other suburban developments complete with shopping malls and highways surrounded by high-end homes only minutes away from downtown business districts like Omaha or Council Bluffs Today local small businesses continue to thrive while Interstate 680 flows by providing easy access to all types of employment opportunities
