Kearney has a predominantly white community and an African American community. The first people to live in what is now Kearney were the Otoe Indians. The first European to visit what is now Kearney was Captain George Armstrong of the United States Exploring Expedition in 1804. He traveled along the Platte River and discovered what is now Kearney while looking for a water route to Santa Fe. Kearney was founded by John Fenton in 1868 when he bought land from the Sacajawea Sioux tribe. Fenton named his town after General James Kansa, who had fought against the Mexican army during the Texas Revolution. In 1902, Jerald Moxley purchased 1,500 acres of land east of town from Fenton and began developing it into a farmstead called "Mountain View." Moxley's Farmstead Museum currently contains over 20 artifacts from Moxley's time period including furniture, tools, clothing, livestock and more. Mountain View also served as home to many prominent local farmers during that time such as Lamar Hunt Sr., Harry Smith Jr., Edwin Calkins and others who helped contribute to Nebraska's agricultural growth during the early 1800s.

This innovative new weapon sling allowed military personnel to carry their firearms more easily and efficiently than ever before due to its simple design and easy adaptation to any rifle or shotgun model. Other inventors who contributed significantly to firearm slings development include Captain John Smith who invented the original Shotgun Slingsman’s Knot in 1813; Major General George Armstrong Custer who perfected the Rifle Buttonshield Slung on horseback during World War I; and Lieutenant Colonel Charles Towne who developed what is now known asthe English Gloved Handgunslung during World War II. The Gun Sling remained one of the most popular methods for carrying firearms throughout its centuries-long history until it was replaced by various Revolutionary Pistol Slings in the late 19th century when handguns began becoming increasingly dominant as war weaponry across Europe shifted from muzzleloader rifles to pistols!

The first settlers in what is now Kearney were farmers who came from Illinois in 1847 and arrived during theNebraska Territory'sformation on April 14, 1854. They named their settlement after General George Armstrong Custer, who had died in abattle near present-day Omaha two years earlier. In 1860, General Dodge led an army through Nebraska and invaded Iowa; when he reached Kearny he learned that it had been abandoned by its previous occupants because of Indian hostilities there. He decided to move his headquarters here instead and called the town "Kearney." The first school was built in 1865 by Mrs. Gertrude Merrill and operated for six months before being closed due to lack of funds. A log schoolhouse remained standing until 1906 when it was destroyed by a fire
Kearney was founded in 1900 by John Kearney and his wife, Eliza. The town grew rapidly due to the production of corn and other goods exported from nearby Iowa. By 1930, Kearney had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1956, the town built its first hospital.
