Kearney is a small town in northern Nebraska, located on the east side of the Missouri River. It was founded in 1868 by C.F. Kearney and his son, George M. Kearney, and has been occupied by the Kearneys since then. The town's name comes from its location at the confluence of the Reno and Platte Rivers, which forms the eastern border of Kearney Township. The first guns used in warfare in America were muzzle loading pistols that were fired from long barrels with swivels on the barrel ends to sighting in targets across a wide area. These pistols had no sights other than for aiming down the barrel and could only be fired by someone who knew where he was shooting because distances varied so much between towns at that time (about 25 miles). As soon as people realized how effective this new form of warfare was they began to develop different methods of using firearms that would work better for them at home and away from battle. Muzzleloading rifles were developed that could be fired with either one or two shots per trigger pull and became very popular after slavery ended in America due to their accuracy and ease of use. This type of rifle was also able to penetrate armor much easier than handguns because it had a heavier barrel which made it more stable when firing into anything big or strong such as human heads or body parts

The Kearney post office was established in 1881, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1953. The first settlers to Kearney were James and Nancy Kearney who moved from Nevada in 1869. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Missouri River near present day Kearney. In 1870 Charles Rourke founded the town of Kearny on land that he had bought from John Schielefeldt for $300. In 1871 J.D. Smith arrived with his family and platted what would become Kearney as a village square on land bounded by First and Second Streets NW; High Street SW; South Third Street SE; and east bank of the Missouri River just above today's corner of First Avenue NE and North Tenth Street NE. In 1875 Wm Hargrave opened a store at what is now Cornerstone Mall which became one of downtown's main attractions for tourists until it burned down in 1907 A&P donated their building to establish an endowed fund which still supports the school district museum today located inside that building (itself now occupied by another grocery store).

The first settlers in Kearney were John and Elizabeth Cavanaugh who built a cabin in 1853 on the northeast edge of town. In 1858, A.J. Kearney founded the town and named it for his brother James Kearny who had died two years earlier in a horseback ride near Fort Laramie. In 1865, Leland Stanford discovered gold near Clearwater and began to explore the area for new properties. He purchased land east of Kearney from John Cavanaugh and established Stanford City about 10 miles south of town on what is now Kansas Street. Stanford soon became one of Nebraska's most successful capitalists and his company developed large tracts of farmland in central Nebraska including much of present-day Kearney County.
