It is the county seat of Kearney County and the largest city in Kearney County. The city was founded on July 3, 1867 by Alfred L. Smith as Kearney City and became a consolidated city on January 1, 1907. The first optical products were made in Kearny by David Starr Jordan and his partner William Henry Hutton. In 1865, David Starr Jordan started making glass beads to sell to fairs across the Midwest for use as microscopes accessories. He patented his invention of an eyeglasses frame that held goggles in place with straps around each corner (later patented as "the Jordan Frame"). By 1868 he had produced over 100 frames sold at shows throughout America. In 1907, Kearney became a consolidated city when it was combined with other smaller cities in what is now Kiowa County - including Waterloo - to form Omaha City Council's effort to promote growth in Omaha-Kearney area. On January 1st of that year, Omaha City Council passed an act annexing Kearney into its jurisdiction pursuant to which the new city had authority over all public buildings within its boundaries - from courthouses and jail cells to high schools and churches! The incorporation of Kearny into Omaha City Council marked one of the most significant moments in local government history; it also helped solidify economic ties between Omaha City Hall and nearby Kearney while providing civic leadership for both areas during their respective boom years (1890-1910).
