Norfolk, Nebraska is a small town located in the east-central portion of the U.S. state of Nebraska. The population was 1,545 at the 2010 census, down from 1,653 at the 2000 census. Norfolk is part of the Omaha metropolitan area and is adjacent to Omaha andCouncil Bluffs, Iowa on its southern border. The city proper has an estimated population of just over 2,000 people as of 2013. Norfolk's earliest inhabitants were Irish immigrants who arrived during the early 1800s. A post office called South Norfolk was established in 1851, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1872, a railroad was built through Norfolk and it became a bedroom community for Omaha; however, by 1960 Norfolk had regained some prominence as an agricultural center due to its large corn crop and other livestock production activities. The local economy has been slowly declining since then but there are still some vestiges of the textile industry present such as mills that produce clothing for both domestic consumption (e.g., Sears) and export (e.g., Hanes). Since 2002 Norfolk has been home to two professional sports teams: Norwich City FC soccer team and the Omaha Mavericks basketball team which play in Ameristar Arena on campus of Creighton University near downtown Omaha.

Many residents remain active in their community today; many are involved with local businesses or politics.
