The Carson City Gun Dog Club was organized in 1903. The club is named for General John J. Pershing who served as the Commander of World War I and later served as the U.S. Envoy to Mexico City. When Pershing arrived in town, he noticed that there were no guns available to civilians and ordered the local gunsmith to build him a few rifles and shotguns. The first members of the club were three men: Wm Hennessey, A.J. Nichols, and George Ritchie (later mayor of Reno). In 1905, the club held its first meeting at a restaurant on Second Street where it met monthly until 1912 when it moved to an office on First Street which still stands today. In 1913, Pershing died suddenly in Arizona without leaving behind any instructions about how or when handguns should be distributed among military forces around the world. As a result, control over handgun distribution passed from government hands to private individuals who then began building their own arsenals (the so-called “gun clubs”) across America each with their own collection of pistols and revolvers. This state of affairs continued until 1934 when President Franklin D Roosevelt signed Executive Order 12333 which banned all private ownership of handguns within the United States (excludingOwners Of Firearms Who Are registered With A Law Enforcement Agency).
