Fernley is a small town in Clark County, Nevada, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Washoe Valley region of the eastern Mojave Desert and borders Reno to the south and Las Vegas to the north. Fernley has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 10,000 years. The first Europeans to come to Fernley were prospectors from California who discovered gold in 1849. In 1865, Arapaho Indians attacked a group of settlers on Rancho Bernardo west of Fernley and killed six men and two women. One settler was driven off his horse with a gunshot that entered his brain killing him instantly; this event is still remembered locally as "The Shooting at Bernardo". In 1870, Jens Jensen started work on Rancho Bernardo which became one of the largest cattle ranches in Nevada. In 1892 he sold it to Augustus Hance who named it rancho Hance after himself and donated it to the State of Nevada for use as a public park. They consisted of a metal band, typically 2 inches in diameter, that was wrapped around the arm at the shoulder and passed over the gun's barrel. The band would either rest against the skin or be attached to a belt loops on the person's waist. By suspending the arm below the point of contact with the ground, it was possible for an attacker to choke orphyxiated (killed) their victim by holding onto their clothing and preventing air from entering their lungs. The first known example of a gun choke was created in 1827 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. This particular device consisted of a strip of metal 3/8 inch wide x 1-1/2 inch long x .5 inch wide, which was mounted on top of an infantry rifle stock and fastened along one edge by means of two screws. The other edge rested upon some kind of pad or post, so that when inserted into the mouthof an assailant who had succeeded in getting his hand round the firearm's barrel, it prevented him from drawing it out again until he had killed his victim outright. Gun chokes continued to be popular throughout most of nineteenth century due in part to their effectiveness as physical barriers against attackers and also because they could easily be adapted for use with different firearms. In 1872, General George Armstrong Custer used a gun choke on Native American Chief Crazy Horse during battle at Little Bighorn Creek while under fire from Indian forces estimated at 25-30 thousand strong. This particular technique proved fatal for Custer as well as many others involved in that engagement including white soldiers and cavalry officers simultaneously employing handgun chokes on enemy warriors resulted in numerous fatalities among both sides; however, this particular instance is still remembered as one of history’s greatest battlefield achievements

Fernley was founded in 1876 by A.L. Fernley and W.H. Webb as a small community on the eastern edge of Carson City, Nevada. The town grew rapidly after water rights were acquired from the Ute Tribe for irrigation purposes and the first school was built in 1877. In 1886, Fernley became an incorporated city with a population of about 350 people. The city experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century and early 20th century due to its location on irrigated land adjacent to the Carson River and its access to transportation including a railroad and stagecoach lines. During World War II, Fernley served as a center for military production in Nevada Territory underthe United States Army Air Forces Ninth Air Force Base at nearby Wendover AFB until 1942 when it was transferred to California USAAF Base Maytag AFB located outside Reno, Nevada as part of Allied forces advances into North Africa following World War II. After 1945, Fernley declined in population while remaining an important agricultural center; however, it has seen recent uptick in development over the last few years that have created new businesses and increased retail options within walking distance of most residents
