Fernley is named for Horace Greeley Fernald, an American aviator and congressman from New York who served from 1905 to 1913. The first settlers in what is now Fernley were soldiers stationed at Camp Carson during World War II. After the war, they began to arrive by wagon train and then by stagecoach. In 1907, a group of men led by Drury discovered large tracts of irrigated land east of Fernley and decided to homestead there. They named their new community after Horace Greeley Fernald, who had helped them purchase their land. The first post office was established in 1951. In 1957, the Ute Indian Tribe acquired 8 square miles (21 km2) of adjacent ranchland which became known as "the reservation." As part of this acquisition, the United States government transferred ownership of all but 3 percent (less than 2 acres) of Fernley's land to the tribe; this reservation remains today one of its most important assets. Today, Fernley has a population that includes many residents from Phoenix and Las Vegas; it also attracts retirees from elsewhere in Nevada and Arizona because its climate is similar to those areas where they live or have lived before coming to California or Nevada

The town was founded in 1912 by John Fernley and his wife Clara. It was named after their home county of Kern County in California. John Fernley had been born there in 1869 and died in 1944. His wife Clara also died in 1944. They were natives of Ohio and lived in Cincinnati until they moved to Reno when John started a meatpacking company there in 1914. After he lost his business, they returned to Reno until they settled here permanently around 1945. Fernley became an American uranium mine during World War II because of its strategic location near Los Angeles and other major cities on the West Coast of America. This made it a target for enemy bombers and submarines during the war, but no damage was done to the town because Uranium mining is not considered an important industry like munitions manufacturing or agriculture, so it wasn’t targets for bombing raids like other places where valuable resources were located close to enemy territory. In fact, some believe that Uranium mining actually helped keep our economy afloat during tough times following the war while other industries took a hit due to lack of demand from both combatants and neutrals alike- this even helped contribute towards our current economic state as we have seen throughout history with conflicts such as these!
