Henderson, Nevada is a city in Clark County, Nevada, United States. The population was 602 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clark County. The name Henderson comes from Mormon pioneers who settled in the area in 1847 and named it after Henson Creek, which flows through the city. The first post office at Henderson was established on July 16, 1857, and was called Harmony. On October 15 of that year, the first townsite in what would become Henderson was laid out by Wm. Fenton and James Settle with land donated by John Custer and others. A town site had been surveyed by Sidney Rigdon for $5 per acre on January 8, 1858; but no Townsite Act or plat was ever passed because of lack of support from citizens. In November 1860,[1] a group of Mormons led by Brigham Young built a small fort near present-day Reno to protect their livestock from Comanche raiding parties heading southward into Utah Territory during the early days of Utah's statehood.[2] In 1861 they moved their fort to what is now downtown Henderson when Reno became available for development as an agricultural center due to its location at the headwaters of Henson Creek. Fort Bridger remained active until 1865 when it also burned down due to lightning strikes caused by rumbles associated with invading Ulysses S Grant's army marching through nearby Carson Valley during his Overland Expedition that summer.[3] In 1862 LDS missionaries camped near present day Sparks while travelling up Henson Creek;[4][5] this event helped spur settlement westward along Henson Creek (and later onto NV) throughout much of 1863 and into 1864 – aided largely by cattle driven overland from Fremont via Carson Valley crossing South Pass road on December 24th (the first vehicular route across NV since before Spanish colonialism).[6][7][8] A store opened in downtown Henderson on October 25th 1861 (one week after Fort Bridger burned down),[9][10] soon followed by two hotel rooms: one occupied each nightfall beginning November 3rd 1861 until May 9th 1862 when both were destroyed in a fire caused by an overheated boiler used to turn water mugs into coffee for local customers;[11][12][13] both hotels are still standing today as part of Pioneer Square Historic District located within Downtown Henderson redevelopment project that began 2009 and finished 201
In 1879, the town of Henderson was founded by miners who discovered gold in nearby prospectors' claims. The mining company that operated the claims soon collapsed, and Henderson became a small farming community. In 1912, Henderson amalgamated with neighboring towns of Dayton and Pahrump to form the new city of Las Vegas.
