Over time, though no major changes occurred to the community until 2001 when all but two streets were paved with asphalt following Proposition 215's passage which legalized marijuana use in Nevada In recent years there has been increased interest in Henderson due to its proximity to both casinos (the MGM Grand Resort & Casino and Caesar’s Palace) as well as various medical cannabis dispensaries located throughout town . Henderson also offers a wide variety attractions including golf courses (including one owned by Tiger Woods), playgrounds, water parks and horseback rides

The early history of Henderson is unknown but it likely started out as a small Native American settlement located east of today's downtown area which would have been accessible only by foot or horseback due to its location near the Mono River. On July 20th 1858 Mormon pioneers led by Brigham Young arrived in what is now Henderson and named it after James Fenimore Cooper’s friend and mentor- one of his most significant supporters during this time period when Mormonism was starting to gain popularity across America as a new religion with many converts moving westward from England and Ireland like James Fenimore Cooper himself did back then! After some initial skirmishes with other Paiute bands nearby (the Battle of Nacoochee Hills) Brigham Young ordered his men to build homes and store goods in what would become known as “The Garden Spot” today’s eastern edge of town where he would live until his death on May 6th 1877 at the age of eighty two! From here he began administration over all aspects of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints in carry out their global missionary work! This included military service against Spanish troops that were invading California during these years so there must have been some pretty close calls along the way!! In fact right up until his death young Brigham Young left behind quite an impressively detailed survey map detailing every nook and cranny found within 3 miles radius around present day Henderson which we can still access online today if we know where to look!!! And btw even though modern day Henderson might not be nearly as picturesquely rural as it once was there are plenty of interesting historical facts about our tiny corner town that deserve your attention regardless… After being founded by Mormons salt water intrusion into ancient underground water sources called Aquifer Canyon caused periodic flooding throughout much northwestern Nevada eons ago that destroyed crops such as wheat, corn etc., thus reversing many cycles established over millions upon millions years!!!! So serious were these issues that early settlers actually built ditches around their homes to avoid mudslides 😥 Anyway back to The Garden Spot folks- after building their sturdyadobe dwellings they started planting food gardens dotting what is now town center & beyond🍴 They grew onions garlic etc while also raising chickens (yes plural!) & pigs 💧 fowl etc…….. life wasn't easy especially since they didn't have transportation so common today !! But gradually things changed & people started using horses & foot traffic increased making communication more possible between neighbors 🙂 By 1850 roads were built connecting various settlements within minutes via stagecoaches😎 Which I think speaks volumes about how far our community has come since then 😊 Today you can find almost any type of drinkable / usable water source within ½ mile radius including several reservoirs just outside town limits 👍🏼 As mentioned earlier “The Garden Spot” quickly became known for its producing fruits & vegetables although tobacco continued to be grown for export until well into the mid 1800s!!! Interestingly enough despite growing mountains full o topsoil wagons could only go so far before getting bogged down in thick mudwalls created by upstream dams!!! So travelers had to either walk or take wagonloads ( literally)of earth&mud down river finally arriving at markets near Carson City😃 Which again shows just how politically unstable things were back then 😕 However given everything going on those days its no wonder plenty folks decided to stay put – living off agriculture (& trade) instead 👌🏼 Check out www.henderson Nevadawebster/historic_events/mormon_ pioneer_ life
Henderson was founded in 1851 by George Henderson, a wagon driver and prospector. The town was named for Henderson's older brother, John, who also founded the town of West Valley in what is now Clark County. In 1864, the Union Pacific Railroad built a line from Reno to Henderson, making it possible for people to travel between the two towns. The railroad also helped to spur development in Henderson and other nearby communities. By 1920, Henderson had a population of around 1,500 people. In the 1940s and 1950s, Henderson experienced rapid growth due to its importance as a transportation hub. By 1970, the town had grown to over 10,000 residents. The following decade saw significant reductions in population due to both global recession and military stationed in Nevada during the Vietnam War. In 2000, Henderson lost its status as an official city because of budget cuts made by then-Mayor Harry Reid. However, it regained full city status in 2006 after being joined by nearby Winnemucca (then known as North Reno).
