On November 3, 1907,[2] mesquite incorporation as a town took place by order of President Theodore Roosevelt under his executive power as governor of Nevada due to its location on both Indian Territory[3][4] and within his own state's borders; this event marked the first time an incorporated town in Nevada had been designated as such by an executive order rather than by vote from its residents or local governing bodies.[5] In 1969 Las Vegas Strip Boulevard became I-15 when Interstate 15 bypassed downtown Las Vegas for eastbound travel only; this made Mesquite one mile (1 km) north of Downtown Las Vegas on I-15 instead of inside City limits where it sat since 1907 pending annexation by DowntownLasVegas which never happened due to lack Of support from then mayor Richard Moller until he resigned abruptly after being indicted on bribery charges unrelated to his mayoral duties just before Christmas 2009[6][7]. Today much like DowntownLasVegas it retains most if not all its historical buildings but has lost much retail acreage including several major casinos along with many smaller ones replaced or destroyed over time making It difficult(if not impossible)to walk around except along main arterial streets such as Spring Street which still features high end retailers although some have relocated elsewhere while others are boarded up or abandoned completely leaving a mostly vacant core surrounded by lowrise buildings typical for cities located adjacent to freeways especially those served by Amtrak trains whose tracks run nearby
