Mesquite, Nevada is a small town in Clark County, Nevada. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is located near the center of Las Vegas and adjacent to Henderson. The town was founded in 1881 by Jedediah Smith and his wife Eliza Mayhew Smith. Mesquite became an incorporated city in 1907. In 1957, it merged with Henderson to become one municipality with a population of over 10,000 residents. A coal mine was established here in 1865 by John Wesley Harding and James Tindle, making Mesquite one of the earliest mining towns in what would eventually become Nevada. From 1865 to 1880, Mesquite received coal from the Anaconda Coal Mines on the eastern edge of present-day Reno. In 1881-1882, mesquite got its name from Texas cattle rancher Chivington Coleman who donated some land for a new town site on which mesquite would be built later that year. The name "Mesquite" likely came about because during those years there were few trees around here so people used spools of cotton thread to make baskets or wagons instead of using wood or leather straps since these materials were unavailable near their homes back then (the fabric today can be made out of just three types of thread: cotton; nylon; rayon). By 1907 it had grown enough that Mesquite City Council decided they wanted their own building blocks - Police Station #1 & #2 were erected that year on 6th Street between Durfee Avenue & Hawthorne Boulevard and #3 was added two years later cornering 6th Street east/west opposite University Avenue (this 3rd police station still stands today). The first courthouse in town - now known as the Western Justice Center - opened February 14th 1912 inside Masonic Temple on Spring Road NE cornering 1st Street NW (it burned down in 1954 but moved back into use as an office building until it burned again in 1980). According to oral history interviews conducted by former Mayor Rick Henson and City Clerk Debra Neely for their book "Las Vegas: A History" Volume I: The Early Years (published 1998), “When we first started talking about doing this book we didn’t know if [the court] building actually existed or not – but we found out fairly quickly that it did!” That same year saw another important event when businessman Harry Wolfson donated $5,000 towards what would become the first municipal water system for Mesquite – serving all 12 “neighborhoods” within walking distance including downtown where you could buy street water from vendors running through every block! This system continues functioning to this day as well as Sewer District No. 5 which emptied into Lake Mead approximately 25 years ago today! In 1917 another important development happened when local physician Drs Franklin Payson and John Fenton purchased 100 acres north off I-15 extending east 2 miles along the shoreline providing enough open space for a hospital and surgical clinic! That same year also saw construction begin on what would ultimately serve asmesqule's only high school - Red Rock High School which opened November 30th 1919 inside Case Mountain Resort Course after months long fundraising activities spearheaded by Mrs. Edith Bechtel!
Mesquite was founded in 1849 by John Wesley Powell. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Missouri River, and in 1865 it became the capital of Nevada. Mesquite's economy boomed during the late 19th century, thanks to its strategic location and resources. In 1907, Mesquite was acquired by the United States government for $10 million in what was then known as the Lincoln Land sale. The town continued to grow until World War II, when it lost most of its residents to military service or relocation. Today, Mesquite is a small community with a modest population density.
