Nowadays, Mesquite has become a center for technology industry with two major tech companies headquartered there - Google and Facebook - as well as numerous other businesses such as Microsoft and Adobe Systems having their offices here too. Mesquite, Nevada is a small town in Clark County, Nevada. The population was 2,837 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mesquite County and the largest city in Clark County by population. The name means "mesquite field" in Spanish. The first permanent settler in Mesquite was José María Cámpora who arrived on July 8, 1847. He founded what is now called the City of Mesquite and named it for his home country, Mexico. A year later Antonio José García y Vargas purchased some land from Cámpora and erected a wooden cabin on what is now known as Garcia Avenue. In 1850 Manuel Gonzales set up a grist mill on Main Street near present-day Park Road and soon afterward began trading goods with settlers in nearby Las Vegas. By 1853 there were six stores in operation within 10 miles (16 km) of Mesquite; all but one were owned by Mexicans or their descendants. On October 12, 1853, Mexican Deputy Colonel Francisco Estrada laid out a townsite on the east side of Mesa Verde Creek about three miles (4 km) north of present-day Mesquite along US Highway 95W to serve as an interim stop between Las Vegas and Mexicali while mining operations developed south of Mesa Verde Creek. On November 6, 1854 Juan Ortiz de la Hoz discovered gold nuggets at Sinkhole Gulch close to where US 95W crosses Mesa Verde Creek just upstream from current day mesaVerde Airport (which served as both an airport and commercial center until 1954). The discovery led to increased traffic through mesaVerde Canyon which caused damage to streams that supplied water for farmers near mesaVerde Creek; these events are commemorated by annual pilgrimage to Sinkhole Gulch by local farmers each fall during the Gold Rush era known as "the big rush." Mining activity ceased around this time because gold veins had not been found yet that could be processed into coins or jewelry using modern techniques; however some miners continued working at Angel's Hole until 1861 when more efficient methods were developed leading to increased production yields over 100%. In 1860 Josefina Cuellar married Jaime Martinez who already owned land adjacent to what is now Chavez Boulevard between Elmira Drive and Old Ranch Road west of downtown mesaVerde. Evidence suggests they may have moved onto their property sometime before 1870 due to growing tensions between them over access to grazing land next door plus Pastor Sanchez's attempt to evangelize Hispanic families living east of I-580 despite warnings from local officials about potential unrest should such missionaries proselytize among non-Catholic Anglo Americans living west of I-580 without prior consent from Mission President David Whiteman Sr..
