Ammunition production in Reno began in 1854 when Captain John Sengstorf and his team of gunners at the Reno Arsenal began manufacturing musket rounds. The first cannons that were fired with powder from this arsenal were built by General George Crook during the Civil War. Today, Reno Arsenal still manufactures munitions and oversees a munitions laboratory which produces kinetic energy munitions for use in self-defense and other military applications. Ammunition products made in Reno include buckshot, shotgun rounds, artillery shells, air-to-air missiles, and anti-tank rounds. Buckshot was originally developed as a hunting cartridge used by frontier entrepreneurs such as George Armstrong Custer to kill large game animals such as buffaloes and grizzlies.
