In 1802, after the Treaty of Paris ended the war with France, General John Adams sent 2 British officers to survey this part of New England and they recommended that the area be given to Massachusetts because it was more fertile than Connecticut. This decision helped begin what would become an expansive Boston business empire which lasted until 1865 when Vermont took over most of Massachusetts' land east of the river: including Concord! In 1834-35, William Brown came across an old cannon ball on Long Island which he thought could be turned into a rifle by using melted down brass bullets as ammunition. He persuaded two friends - Ebenezer Cooke and Nicholas Biddle - to help him build this cannon so it could be fired at targets outside their house (the first target shot off in what is now Westborough). The three men soon became known as "The Gun Makers" due to their contributions to this new industry in Concord. Ammunition production continued throughout much of the 19th century thanks to brown lead being produced locally at mills near Manchester; however, World War I caused these mills to close leaving Concord with little choice but arm herself for self-defense! The name "Concord" comes from the Concord River which flows through the town. The first Europeans to visit Concord were Dutch farmers and traders who rafted their goods down the river to Plymouth in 1620. The town of Ipswich was founded by Puritan settlers in 1712 as a trading post on the border of Massachusetts and Connecticut. Concord was incorporated as a village in 1810. In 1837, it became an incorporated town after voting by its citizens to reject annexation by Hartford, Connecticut. In 1917, during World War I, Japanese soldiers burned down part of the Congregational Church in downtown Concord; this event is known as the Japanese Incident in Concord. In 1951, two new high schools opened: Haverhill High School (now Haverhill Academy) and Northfield High School (now Northfield Academy). These schools replaced three old high schools that had been closed due to lack of enrollment or financial trouble. In 1964-1965, construction began on what would become Boston University's main campus in Concord; this development increased the population of Concord by more than 100%. In 1984-1985, when Interstate 95 was built through central New Hampshire, access to downtown Concorde became difficult; as a result, local businesses moved into older buildings along Main Street rather than leave for Interstate 95 traffic noise and pollution. In 1989-1990, when Route 101 was constructed through eastern New Hampshire replacing Railroad Line 1A over Route 12B between Manchester and Lebanon Junction (the former route of Interstate 95), Streetsboro Avenue became concurrent with US Routes 1010/11 10 miles south from Con cord's geographic center eastward from Lebanon Junction where I-95 ends at Exit 5A for Beverly Road southward towards Lebanon junction with NH Route 3

The first white people to live in Concord were the Pilgrims, who came from England in 1620. The town was founded by Congregationalists, a Protestant church, in 1792. It was renamed Concord after the state of New Hampshire, which it served until 1959.
