Dover, New Hampshire is a town in King County, New York. The population was 8,569 at the 2010 census. Dover was founded by English colonists in 1764 on the east side of the Delaware River. It became an incorporated city in 1887 and a town in 1959. The name "Dover" is derived from the Old English word dóorf (meaning "town"). In 1614, when Bradford did his first survey of what would become King County, he named it after his sponsor Lord Dartmouth. At that time there were only two other towns in New York City: NYC's Lower Manhattan and Staten Island. The town started as a small settlement on the banks of the river opposite where modern-day Dover stands today. By 1764, there were ninety families living here and cattle were being driven downriver to be sold at market near Albany and Philadelphia. During this early period of its development, Dover acted as an important trade center for bothNew Englanders and Scots traders who had come overland through Pennsylvania during the Revolutionary War to help fight for independence from British rule. In 1817–1818, when NY Statehood was granted to the United States by George Washington during his Farewell Address, Dover voted not to secede from NY but join with Albany as part of that state's Second Legislature which met in Rochester (now Buffalo). This event is commemorated with a statue located on Main Street commemorating that decision made by local citizens - one vote against secession! During its formative years, Dover enjoyed close relationships with London and other northern American cities due to its convenient location across the river from Albany—a hub for commerce during this crucial period of US history. Additionally thanks to its role as a transportation corridor linking up these various markets—and also because it lay within easy commuting distance of major settlements such as Boston andPhiladelphia—Dover quickly became known among Americans throughout much of North America as one of America's most bustling towns during this era." In 1958 – just three years after it had been designated an incorporated city – Dover merged with neighboring Uniondale into one consolidated municipality under Mayor John Aiken (1958-1965). It has since seen several changes; including annexation by Onondaga County in 1998; increased population growth following waves of Asian immigration starting around 1990; suburbanization beginning around 2000; and more recent efforts to make Dover more environmentally sustainable through green initiatives such as reducing energy consumption through retrofits to internal combustion engines used within municipal services." Today – nearly 60 years after first settling here – people from all walks of life call Dover home...pioneers like James Kappan who platted what is now downtownuo back then helped lead our community forward while mother nature continued providing consistent demand for goods we produced including lumberjacks chopping down trees right outside our doors even still going strong today handloading logs off those trucks heading out your door step
