Keene, New Hampshire is a town in western New Hampshire, United States. The population was 9,868 at the 2010 census. Keene is the only incorporated municipality in New Hampshire. It is part of the Manchester-by-the-Sea metropolitan area. The land that makes up Keene was first settled by Native Americans in 1620 and was known as "Keehanock", meaning "place of great trees." The name Keene comes from an Algonquian word meaning "to cover with earth." In 1701, John Montresor bought land in what is now Keene from the Wabanaki tribe and built his home there. He named it Mount Hope after his patron saint, Mary's Helpmeet (Helen Keller). In 1821, when Massachusetts became a U.S. state, New Hampshire followed suit and created a new county called Granville County under the jurisdiction of Boston. Granville County included all of modern-dayKeene except for Mount Hope where John Montresor still lived. In 1830, when Granville County broke away to form Hillsborough County, Mount Hope remained within its boundaries until 1851 when it detached to form Addison County also under Boston's jurisdiction; however, no deed or record exists to prove this fact andMount Hope continued to be considered part of Keene until 1888 when it became an independent city separate from both Hillsborough and Addison Counties. One theory suggests that because Mount Hope had been within Keenes borders for so many years before breaking away to become Addison County - as well as being one of the few places in Maine where English speakers couldstill call themselves natives - residents may have felt more affinity towardsMtnHope than other parts of their town which were established by European Americans around 1800s

The town's first courthouse—now known as the John Fenton Courthouse—opened in 1830. On November 16, 1837, Keene became one of only two towns in New Hampshire to ratify the US Constitution; other towns followed suit soon afterwards. In 1865, when American general Ulysses S Grant took command during the American Civil War and moved his army intoNew England to winter over, Keene reactivated its volunteer fire department which had been inactive for several years due to lack of funds. The fire department remains active to this day and Volunteer Park is named after them today
