A few years later General John Forbes founded Fort Kent on Mount Hope Island (now north side of Portsmouth) as part of his effort to secure control over this new source of wealth for the United States. Keene, New Hampshire is a town in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 5,584 at the 2010 census. The name of the town came from an incident that took place on December 12, 1768 when John Keene and his friends were234 miles (375 km) north of Boston after being captained by Samuel Adams during the Revolutionary War. They had been exploring what would become the state of New Hampshire when they came across a group of Native Americans living near Concord. When they tried to leave to tell their Indian friend about what they saw, they were stopped by local militia led by Colonel John Pitcairn. Keene and his friends were then accused of disorderly conduct and taken into custody until Governor Pemberton could arrive with more troops to free them. After being released without charges, Keene set out for Boston with his companions again. On this trip he met General George Washington who gave him a ride back to Concord so he could show him where the Indians lived. In 1802 John Cushing became postmaster at Keene and served until 1800; during this time there was only one stage line running through town which ran between Manchester and Portsmouth The first store in Keene opened in 1814 A cotton gin began production in 1820 The first school building was built in 1830 The first telephone service was established in 1876 Keene has six churches: All Saints Episcopal Church (1830), First Baptist Church (1832), Methodist Episcopal Church (1860), Presbyterian Church (1881), Congregationalist church (1915) and Baptist church (2005).
